Left sided colitis

Anyone got any specific experience of left sided colitis. Have it ten years. Difficult to get remission. Any useful help welcome as been on steroids for to long. Been through all the usual drugs and now on lhumira but may not do job.

Steroid virtually throughout. Various ASA, and 6MP. Just started Humira a few months ago and felt is was starting to work expect for morning urgency, but got some kind of cough and either it or the antibiotic to treat it caused a bad flare up. On high steroid dose to reduce flare and upping Humira but doctor concerned might have built up antibodies to it as he doesn't relate flareup and the cough or antibiotic. Remicade possibly next but told surgery only option after that.

Rectal meds are key to helping left sided colitis...at least for me. Helped me to get off pred an into remission..

I have generally used mesalamine enemas (Rowasa at first, and now generic). They've worked well for me. I think Salofalk is the same but I don't know.

For me brandname Colazal provided my big break-through in 2003 for controlling left-sided UC. (Now U.S. producer Salix is taking it off the market, though, ugh!) If you have inflammation in the descending colon, the mesalamine enemas cannot reach there & do not control it. The steroid enemas can help after 3+ weeks of daily use when more of the med gets absorbed systemically. It sounds like you are steroid dependent, not good for your bones & other body organs over time. Did your gastro consider azathioprine (Imuran) at all? Many members posting here report good results taking it in combo with mesalamine meds. Thanks for help. Unfortunately was not able to take Imuran. But I will try and track down colazal. Need to get OSS steroids somehow hopefully without surgery.

I have had left sided UC for many years also. The first thing I do is increase my Asacol and add Rowasa for at least three weeks, (per my Dr.) you can see at the bottom of my profile what I use. Like the other responses I am a beleiver of Probiotics and L-glutamine
