hey FYI, here in the USA there is a weird flu virus going around ( I think mainly in the northeast) its causing sharp pain in the upper arm and body aches joint pains, sore throat cough and fever. even if u have the flu vaccine this is the strain that got omitted as evidence I took the vaccine and have the flu now. stay safe friends!

There are many flu viruses we can be exposed to (people travel a lot during this time of year), and since the vaccine only covers the main 3 that would be epidemic or could cause serious illness or death, ...hard to sometimes not get the flu even after having the shot.

I soooooo feel for you...it's a horrible thing to have. It's happened to me a few times over my lifetime, and relief was fleeting.

Take good care of yourself, and if you don't improve or get sick again, get yourself checked out. Pneumonia piggy backs those flu viruses too.

I just got over some kind of flu with body aches. It wasn't that bad, only lasted a couple days. I tend to prefer a flu over a flu shot.

nssg...I'll assume you didn't have a flu with teeth-chattering 103+ fever for a few days, feeling like a truck ran over you a few times and that just dying would just be easier? Plus 10 days worth of chest/sinus infection, cough and headache that lasted the entire time?

If not....I think you'd prefer the shot...oh wait...that was when I did have the shot!

No guarantee on what viruses are floating around in our areas....

I've had a headache today that hasn't even budged with aspirin....it's worsening throughout the day. I'm actually concerned that I'm getting something.....

You could have very well got the same strain you had the shot for. There is no guarantee in that shot that you won't get the same strain.

I wasn't too sick. I guess I just had a cold. Flu sounds much more serious. I had a slight fever, probably not over 99 and I was run-down for a few days but I didn't stop doing my regular activities. I wasn't stuck in bed or anything. I've never had a flu shot and I am not sure i've had a flu, the way people describe it, it doesn't sound like anything I've experienced. I did have food poisoning a week or two ago and that was way worse than the cold.

Notso, if you had the flu you would know! lol I had the flu about 10 years ago...oh my goodness, I thought I was dying. Fever of 101+, muscle aches, blow torch to the joints, chills, congestion, it felt like my head was going to fall off my shoulders, nausea....since then, I've always had the flu shot and *knock on wood* I have been spared from getting it since.

Penngurl, I hope you feel better soon. Being sick is horrible! Truth be told, I would rather flare from my Uc than ever get the flu again. I just got over a sinus infection which dragged me thru the mud and back for 7 days.

I agree with above-flu is pretty hardcore. Like you've been hit with a semi.

Hmmm, I just returned from the Northeast and both the fiance and I have colds. Cough, sore throat, fatigue, mild fever with accompanying aches and pains. It's not too terrible but I really wish I could stay in bed and drink lots of soup instead of working (where my whole lab is sick anyway.)

Question for the science/med people here (non flu related):

How does a doctor determine what antibiotic to give when someone has a sore/infected throat? I don't remember ever having a throat culture taken as an adult. How do they know whether it's strep throat or something else? (Yes I know flu doesn't need antibiotics).

I have the non-flu respiratory bug for the last 5 days, not as bad as full-body flu but still bad. Have resisted going in for antibiotics and think I've succeeded. Took extra VSL#3 when the sore throat hit, lots of fluids including chicken broth. Seemed to help, plus taking Claritin D to keep congestion at bay and now Tussin for coughing.

I have had only one cold in the past 5 years ever since I have been supplementing with vitamin D to get my blood levels to the optimum level. Of course this theory goes right out the window if I hear that Quincy is saying she is also suffering from the flu. I see 4500 IU in her signature.

Not to brag but this is my first respiratory bug in almost 12 years and it's no fun (no flu in that time either). I quit shaking hands back then because I could absolutely place blame on that act for getting the worst bug in my life, almost Epstein-Barr in severity.

I take a little Vitamin E, 5000IU 3x week but also get a lot of skin exposed sunshine D here in South Florida year round.

BTW I just looked at WebMD and found that sore throats are almost always viruses which aren't normally throat cultured. Doctor must have grounds to suspect a bacterial infection before ordering throat culture.

In regards to sore throats-every darn time my daughter has a sore throat they culture her (and we are now at the point where she won't let them do it, they haven't been very nice about it, last time she threw up blood after they were done) and she only had strep one time and she's probably been cultured at least 10 times. They culture her without even looking at her throat first. I on the other hand have never been cultured as an adult (they wouldn't be able to anyway since I too had a bad experience and I just won't let anyone come near me--I know head case).

Babe...I'm fine today. I think it was the weather system going through, extreme drop to low. Today it's snowing but the pressure is going up.
Aspirin and Bentylol seemed to help. I won't mention the Almond Roca, however ;-)
