IBD on the Rise Worldwide

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is becoming more common worldwide, according to a study published in the journal Gastroenterology.

Researchers found that the incidence of IBD is either increasing or stable in every region of the world with data about the disease, and that it's more common in developed countries than developing countries.

They also found that IBD was most common in the age range of 20 to 40. That's worrisome for public health, the study authors say, because the disease comes with long term health care costs, and threatens to become a burden on the health care system.

Terrible.. :( I think i'm gonna start buying lottery tickets every week, and if i win in 20 years i'm going to donate all of the proceeds to research that I can keep an eye on, tired of waiting even for just methods of treatments.

I would never wish this illness upon anyone else, but if any of these doctors or scientists had a darn clue of what we go through on a daily basis, i have a feeling they would become more pro-active.

Somedude: I'd take mild fybro over mild UC. At least I wouldn't be embarrassed all the time.

sigh....the positive side of IBD on the rise, is more awareness, more food options, more $$ towards research

I think we (as patients with UC/Chrons) really need to raise awareness more with the public about this growing epidemic. It's the gross-out factor that many of us want to keep private, and if we decide to come forward and announce of our illness we automatically assume they are now always visualizing us going to the bathroom several times a day. I agree, i'm pretty embarrassed to have to explain myself to my sister who wanted to understand it better, but just doing so made a little bit of difference to someone else in understanding how serious this issue can be.
