Brought salofalk enemas 4g from Canada now in the Uk they dont do 4g!

Hello everyone.
I'm a bit fuming!

I brought my retention enemas 4g from Canada when i moved to the uk.
I saw the GP this morning and she said to confirm with the pharmacist about the equivalent wich I did.

However they only do Asacol 1g or 2g enemas! 4g isnt available in the uk!

How will it affect my treatment?

On the sunny side though the gp prescribed me oral asacol and she said to dose as i wish as it seems i know my body more than she does lol

I want to eventually treat both ends to maximise my chance of remission (remission takes forever to come as its been 6 months im on the enemas).
However i reduced my bm to 2 in the morning softly formed and still some mucous.

I think at this point i need the pills and enemas so they can have a little healing party in me!

But im so worried on how half the dose of the enemas will affect me :S

Hi..If you use them continually/nightly and possibly use the 1g foam during the day, that should have you covered.

You need both end treatment regardless...what dosage of oral asacol are you going to be on?

Try not to worry....treat. It might take a tad longer, but considering you're doing better than worse, it seems OK.

I used the 2g for a while for maintenance, but the 4g are what I prefer to use. just because....as per my scope I have minimal inflammation very low rectally...I'll stick to them for max dosage.

The only thing you might have to do is treat more often if you find the 2g isnt enough...but it probably will be.

Again...please try not to worry about it. At least it's not only supps available...lol, and even then...that would be better than nothing..

Keep us posted. It's awesome you have a doc who did the 'script.

well thanks for your nice words.
Im happyto say i started off asacol today. Doctor gave me only 90 pills until 09 of febuary (my specialist appointment) and she said to dose like I feel its good for my body.

Ive seen some signature like yours that are taking on average 2400mg daily. Would be 6 daily or I can stick to 4. I guess at this point there is no harm for the 6 pills a day.

I was on asacol pills for years when i was new to UC and it was perfect for me. No symptoms or flare and was on 4 pills a day.

I think I needed that extra help with pills to maximise the enemas treatment. How long should it starts to be effective? Any idea?

Yeah, I'm pretty predictable regarding some posts..lol.

You should use the oral anyway...I started on 4 (1600mg daily), but the doc put me up to 6 (2400mg daily) after diagnosis. That increase plus the enemas.

You could eventually consider to lower the dosage maybe after your next scope. And if all is perfect above the rectum, you might consider to lower the dosage.

It's not that you need the extra help....you need to keep the rest of your colon in good nick :-D
so to say....forever. And keep your flares limited to the lower part/rectum if you can.

Remember you can always increase, but 5ASA is treatment and maintenance....a good insurance from my experience.

Well like you im totally sold to 5ASA.
No side effects for me and regular treatment long term.

But indeed I find sometimes it takes patience with them but on the long run it has benefits like keeping low the risk of colon cancer. And like i said no side effects.

Well Ill do a week of 1600mg I think and see how it goes. Anyway the asacol should kick in eventually with 48 hours i hope!

You may do well witht he lower dose. I have 4g enemas and 1g suppositories and I rarely ever feel like I need to use an enema. I have been feeling pretty stable lately. I think each person is individual and if your UC is somewhat mild, you may do well on the 2g or as qunicy said, use the 2g at night and 1g in the morning. Try not to stress, it will work out, especially with the addition of an oral med.
