anyone ever experience this? related to UC? I'm just on Lialda right now, getting over my yearly prolonged cold/cough, but now my tongue hurts. To the point where I have to cringe when food runs across my tongue.

interestingly enough it's the same place where I put the Vit D drops. Going to have to pay attention to that tomorrow, maybe skip a day or three and see what happens

Make sure you don't have thrush. Oral yeast infection.

One simple solution might be to use equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and tap water (this time of year I prefer lukewarm to warm). Stir the mixture and swish/gargle this solution inside your mouth, tilting your head in different positions to get the liquid in tight places, lift your tongue while doing so also. Hold each mouthful for about 10 seconds, spit out and repeat until you empty the glass (8 ounces total). Don't brush your teeth afterwards or eat right away. I like to allow the small amount of residue left behind to seep into my gums and mouth, etc.

While I don't have the UC diagnosis, I have rather severe IBS like symptoms and after I get a cold, I often develop oral blisters that take forever to clear up. A pharmacist told me to do the above and it's so cheap. Incredibly cheap.

I have a similar thing going on--my tongue definitely feels raw, and at the back feels like someone cut it with razor blades. I have some mouth and tongue ulcers also, not fun at all and making it very hard to eat. I just saw my ENT and he said at least the ulcers are called aphthous ulcers, and you can get them on your tongue and throat as well and they are common with autoimmune diseases. He advised taking motrin a couple times a day to shorten the duration of this, though of course we aren't really supposed to do that with UC, but I have to find a way to eat something solid that won't make me cringe in pain, so I am giving it a try. We will see what my GI says when I see him next week..

I just started drinking Slippery Elm powder tea and apparently that can help with mouth/tongue sores, so I have been making that on the thick side to try and coat my mouth. I also use Cepacol sore throat/cough drops b/c they have benzocaine which numbs the mouth.

Now that two of you mentioned this happening after a cold, I am getting over a sinus infection, still have a cold, but maybe that in connected to this as well.

Beachlife, out of curiosity, why do you use Vit D drops instead of a pill? Does it absorb better or something? I take a 4000 iu pill every day.

huh? I drop the d drops in a small glass of water and quickly drink it. Is that bad?

Really now, beachlife, we must insist that you stop eating those Brillo Pads. :-)

Sorry, one more discussion about pooh around here and I think I'll slash my wrists.

Seriously, its most doubtful that your irritated tongue has anything to do with ulcerative colitis although a possible connection might be anemia if you're bleeding with any regularity. One symptom of anemia is a sore tongue. Other possibilities are diabetes, canker sores or oral cancer but these latter two are unlikely as it is almost certain that you would have noticed and reported the lesions to your physician long ago.

Have you googled 'sore tongue' or 'mouth sores' and UC? Lots of info, not as uncommon as I had thought. Hadn't heard that a symptom of anemia is a sore tongue, so many of us on here, including me, are anemic. Interesting.

beachlife....they're painful! You might try changing your toothpaste to possibly help with easing some of the irritation.

I've never had throat ulcers.....I wouldn't suggest using ibuprophen. Maybe ask the doc for an oral gargle such as Tantum to help ease the pain? There are also some throat sprays that contain zinc that can be helpful in healing the ulcers as well as easing the pain. I haven't searched, but if I come up with something I'll let you know.

I'm curious what kind of gum you chew? If you take anything cinnamon, it's a common mouth allergen. I cannot chew it at all.

Hope they ease soon.

I still say the easiest thing in the world is to gargle with the water/hydrogen peroxide mixture. You may have a bottle in your medicine cabinet. It's my go-to gargle product after a cold or the flu.
