Citrucel powder vs pills

Hi All,

I am new to here. I have been recently diagnoised with UC. My doctor wants me to drink citrucel twice a day. I can't stand the stuff. I see they have a pill form of citrucel out, would that work as good?

I am currently taking Asacol 800mg three times a day.

I got sick last August and found out I had severe UC along with Gangrene in my colon. I had two sections of my colon removed and given an illiostomy bag for 12 weeks while healing. Then they went in to reconnect me and get rid of the bag. I do not miss the bag at all. Even though I am dealing with running to the bathroom alot.

I don't like the cost of the med but don't have a choice. As I've read on here, not taking it correctly can cause problems. Like today I have diahrrea and wonder if it's because I backed down on the asacol after finding out how much it cost me. I take immodium to help with that but look forward to finding out ways to deal with this on here.

I haven't put my bio on here yet, but will after this question.

Does anyone else have to take the citrucel? If so, how much and pill or powder?

I love this site and am very thankful for it.

Hi Halo

Perhaps your doc feels you need the Citrucel in a more available form than the pill because you have less colon to work with. That seems reasonable but if you aren't using the liquid because you hate it that isn't good. You should call the office and ask if there is something else instead, maybe unflavored.

I take Citrucel pills and way back used the powder but don't like the other ingredients in the powder now. Maybe Metamucil makes an unflavored powder if Citrucel doesn't.

Pill quantity: I used to take 6 Cit. pills daily but now am down to 2/day and getting other fiber in food intake.

I was thinking the same thing about the powder working better than the pill. I can handel the powder but sometimes don't have time for it. I'll have to talk to the doc at my next appt to see what he thinks. Maybe I'll use the pills when I don't have time for the powder. Thanks for the advice.

Did your doctor say anything about taking probiotics?

I think I saw something on the Ostomies forum that said VSL#3 or another strong probiotic is used for those who have had surgery.

Probiotics replace the friendly bacteria in your colon that process food.
I've known people to take them to stop ordinary diarrhea.
Might be something to ask about.
