I'm mainly a Crohn's patient but suffer from proctitis, so I thought I might find help in this forum. My proctitis is flaring these days without a known reason. I feel outer swelling, D, tensemus and severe cramps. I have this ugly stabbing knife sharp pain that sometimes makes me wake up from sleep. I feel I'm starting a flare up. When I was on Methotrexate, things were under control. However, MTX caused me a severe stomach flare up that necessitated iv fluids and injections for 10 days, so my doc decided to suspend MTX for the time being. I have been taking Pentasa enema but it seems it doesn't work. I'll switch today to steroid enema.
Also, two months ago, I started having C and difficulty having a bowel movement. I saw a colorectal surgeon at that time who decided that I have narrowing due to scarring and so I should not use any enemas. A week ago, I saw another one and he decided that there was no narrowing but swelling because of proctitis and also recommended not using any enemas. Suppositories don't give me any relief. Sometimes, my doc prescribes Flagyl but I can't tolerate metronidazole even in the suppository form. Are the proctitis meds only 5-ASA suppositories or enema and steroid suppositories and enemas? Are there other forms of proctitis meds? How do you deal with your flare up?
Your replies are highly appreciated.
