Also, VSL#3 is available without a prescription ap places like Costco for about $75.
Don't know what DS costs but a prescription is needed.
My drug insurance does not cover either one.

If you're in the US and have insurance, you might be able to get VSLds covered if your GI gives you a script. VSL otherwise is less "strong" and OTC. It's pretty expensive and not covered by insurance. DS is not available in Canada.

my insurance won't cover DS and a 20 day supply is $180!!!!!! i about fainted when i went to pick it up. this is why i go to target now.

my insurance pays some. I would pay $55 for twenty packets of DS.

Would I take just one a day? would I take the OTC twice a day?

How cheap can I get the OTC. I saw one price of $54 for 60 capsules.

The DS is "live" and "refrigerated". is the OTC the same in this regard?

Yes, both are live and refrigerated, and that's why you have to be very careful where you get the OTC from. If they're not kept cold, they won't work. Generally VSLDS from a reliable source, by prescription, is a LOT cheaper and in my experience works better too. It also tastes sweeter (they put maltose in) which for some may make it more palatable.

my insurance company seems to think 1 pqacket DS = 1 day supply. Is this correct?

I pay $70 for a months supply of DS (3 boxes of 20) with my insurance, Cigna.
