Prednisone

sorry im new so i forgot to ad my age i am a 27 year old male with severe/moderate UC currently flaring

Drink more water other then that I don't think there is anything other then eating. Unless you are really worried about your weight I'd suggest eating.

The first time I was on prednisone I took 60mg and in two weeks I had gained 20lbs and got the typical 'moon' face of pred. This time around I have been on 40mg for 2 weeks and I am much more conscious of what I am eating. Saltine crackers and peppermint tea have helped me with the munchies. Try to focus on getting better first and worry about losing the weight later. Good luck!

Joined this site after reading numerous forum's I have come across during endless episode's of prednisone induced insomnia. (NOT FUN)

Was diagnosed with serve left sided UC about 7 weeks ago, after initially responding well to 30mg pred (tapered 5mg per week, off completely last week) and 2400mg of ASACOL (continuing this dose) my symptom's are slowly but surely returning. Not returning in the previous demonic way, of worrying about leaving the house, feeling as sick as a barbie doll in a microwave or having a constant ''male period'' but defo not absent.
Wondering how common this is after quitting pred for the first time, have read up about people saying this is rare, but also other's saying it's generally a certain complication when starting steroid based medication.
My whole life has done a 360 then back again, and again, I feel more depressed then I can ever recall, my skin is breaking out, my confidence has gone, feeling kind of broken/angry/sad....I am 21 and am supposed to be enjoying life and looking forward to thing's, effecting my work horrifically, and although it pain's me to say, I am not sure how much I can take of this! Have always been a strong outgoing individual, and this isn't only making me ill, it's making me a totally different person.
My Next appointment at hospital is Wed, and really contemplating lying and saying I am symptom free, can't bare the though of pred again!! Please help, sorry if I sound negative, just a bit lost.....THANKS!!

JCO098 I hear you I was on a high dose of prednisone for two years ive always been 150lbs but while i was on pred for the first time io got up to 220 i was constantly hungry to be perfectly honest i got so depressed i would cry often and not be able to sleep i have ugly strech marks from the weight gain and loss once i stopped the pred the only thing i can tell you is that once you stop using prednisone its not to hard to lose the weight gained while on pred i think you should ask your doc about remicade i have a doc app today and im going to ask my doc about it i was on it before and while i was i never had a flare if you or anyone ever would like to chat with me it would be nice to have a conversation with someone i dont get to go out much because of my colitis so i dont really have any freinds so i would really enjoy talking anyway there is hope i think it could always be worse and we live in the one country where it can always get better


27/m UC since 2005 on 800mg of asacol 3x daily 10mg ambien to sleep and vitacraves multivitamin

I am not on prednisone right now but am expecting my doc to perscribe it this afternoon after my apt i am in the middle of a really bad flare

Thanks to much for replies, feel's kind of re-assuring speaking to people direct with a similar problem's, up until now just been checking old forum's, didn't really know how to address the situation. One of the biggest issue's I have faced is the extreme alone feeling's I feel even though I am surrounded by people constantly! Up until my diagnosis I had never heard of UC, and always just thought of cancer with problem's affecting the bowel, It almost seem's like a silent illness, not really talked about or publicised, (Sick of people confusing IBD, with IBS!)
UCTURTLE, thank's for your advice, would love to chat with you and other's, defo think it would be beneficial! InSoFla, just on Asacol 8oomg x3 daily, no diet modification as of yet as I believe my consultant is curious to see how I reacted to Pred. Kazbern, thanks so much for your advice, all I know is that I have serve UC, at least 40cm, (is this bad?) only had a flexi sigmoid up til now, (which was frickin awful!! no sedation, ***!!) although consultant has told me a full colonoscopy is essential, have read alot about enema's and how effective they can be in retaining remission although the only personal experience I have was before my flexi, Ready to try anything!!
I missed my app today, due to personal issue's, will ring hosp first thing tomorrow, to be honest at the moment year's of medication does not look appealing, wondering whether surgery is the better option! Still trawling through endless sight's to learn about this bloody illness, you are all so brave, and are helping me more then you know!! Thanks guys!!! x

Sorry I can't help because I couldn't control my munchies but I had to say that I could not go to sleep at night cause I would think about food all the time. Embarrassing, I know -.-
