colonoscopy prep.?

 Do you have to use the prep. the g.i. office wants you to use.

In the 8 years with colitis I have never has a colonoscopy.I had a sig. when diagnosed 8 years ago and I only used enema because I was nursing my son.The other sig. I had a year ago and I used picolax.It wasn't too bad but I still threw up on the second glass. This g.i wants me to use something else ,lots of liquids but i would like to use picolax again .I did call and they said to use what they told me to(that was the receptionist.)But i would like to go and used the picolax anyway.

Do you think that would be o.k? Opinions please

I would do what they tell you. My GI said if I wasn't cleaned out enough then they wouldn't do the scope.

You could call back and explain that you get sick (throw up) from a lot of liquids and you would like the receptionist to ask the doctor if it's okay for you to use what you are comfortable with. It's not really the receptionist's place to answer your medical questions. If she tries to answer you again, just say, I'd like to speak with my doctor or his/her nurse.

But if the picolax made you throw up, why don't you want to use something else?

I have a very weak stomach,just assume more liquid to drink will be harder for me to keep it down.Plus I am scared of the possible side effects.these preps can't be good for our colons.

I did the miralax mixed with berry falvored propel (clear) It really wasnt bad at all.

If you get in there and they cant do it, you will get billed anyways.

I remember gagging and suffering through the prep on my first colonoscopy very well. It was definitely the hardest part of the entire procedure. However the doctor told me that he was able to see the lining of the colon really well and it was very helpful in my diagnosis. It does seem like it would be hard on your system to flush out all of stuff in there so quickly and at times violently. I felt like I was pressure washed from the inside out.

I am not sure why there are so many different types of prep. I have also had a prep that involved taking a few pills and that was much easier for me to tolerate. For the sigmoidoscopies I only had to use fleet enemas the day of the procedure. Speak to your doctor about your comfort level and ask for a different options for prep. Make sure to talk to him/her directly first and not the receptionist.

If it is a liquid prep try putting it in the fridge so it is cold so it is easier to drink. A friend also suggested mixing it with a little gingerale to make it easier to swallow but not sure if this interferes with the cleaning of the colon. Good luck!

I was just given SUPREP to try for my next scope. He said it didn't involve so much drinking.

Anyone try this brand yet?

     My husband is having a colonoscopy this Friday.  His doctor prescribed Halflightly.  He has to take tablets first...I think they are called Bisacotyl.  He was reading the side effects at the breakfast table..lol...oy.  He started to turn white and said..."Maybe I should just cancel."  Here's a man who only has to have a colonoscopy once every five to seven years!!!  I asked him if he wanted to have an ostomy like I have...then no more colonoscopies tongue !  That made the test seem a LOT better..hehhehe.

zdenka - My GI said the safest prep to use is GoLytely. It is a lot of liquid though but I did fine with it. Did you call the office back and ask again?

    zdenka, when I had colonoscopies, my GI doctor always prescribed Nulightly.  It was that gallon jug smhair .  However, my trick was to eat very lightly for two days before the prep...just mostly clear liquids anyway...broth, lemon or lime  jello...you know the drill.  Anyway, the day I had to take the prep, all I needed to drink was maybe one third of that crap. It's not the best tasting stuff.  Drink it very cold and through a straw.  If you drink through a straw, you can take big gulps of it and swallow.  I took a few sips of cold gingerale to follow.  Sort of kills that taste.

The one I mentioned is a ton of liquid though...so if you can't handle much liquid, it probably wouldn't be a good choice. I had my c-scope in the afternoon so my doctor had me drink half of the gallon prep the night before and half the morning of the scope. I liked it that way and I think it would have been really hard to drink the entire gallon in one sitting. I agree to drink through a straw. I would also eat a bite of jello after taking a drink to get the taste out of my mouth.

I was prescribed the Surprep also. It was 2- 8 ounce bottles that you don't mix with anything... it tasted like a really strong flavored water with a bit of a salty after taste... wasn't bad... and it was only about an hour of pot time and all was done.. no cramping or anything dramatic like some of the others...

     It is now 6:45 pm and hubby started drinking the prep at 3pm.  He already drank over a quart and still nothing!  His stomach looks like he swallowed a watermelon.  He took the tablet at 10am this morning.  Geez, I hope he starts going soon smhair .

zdenka, i honestly don't think it matters what you drink. i don't do the preps if i can help it. i prefer juice fasting instead. the only preps i was ever given were Nulytelly and magnesium citrate/dulcolax. the magnesium citrate one didn't work and i still had poop in my colon. nulytelly works crazy though and makes me bleed a lot.
