Enlarged bladder and Azathioprine

I've had UC for about 18 months now and have been in Azathioprine for 10 months. Recently, I've been diagnosed with an enlarged bladder. I've had persistent burning during urination the longer I've been taking Azathioprine and I'm wondering if the two are related. Its like I've trained myself to ignore the signals to go urinate. Of course, my urologist does not care about what may be the cause of my bladder issue, he wants me start using a catheter twice a day until my bladder size is reduced. I've discontinued the Azathioprine to see if that helps before I start using a catheter. Anyone else have bladder issues while taking Azathioprine?

how did u get diagnosed with enlarged bladder? I am taking6 mp since November and I've been waking up at night to urinate I never had this b4. it started like 2 months ago.

When I was taking 6mp, I had a problem with frequent urination and bladder pain, an issue I have never had before. I got a sonogram and some other tests, although they never looked in my bladder (that was going to be the next step). The doctors thought it was unlikely to be caused by the 6mp, but all my symptoms started right after I began taking 6mp. Others on the forum have experienced similar issues. You might want to search for some older posts.

I stopped taking 6mp (I was also on Remicade at the time) but it took another few months for the symptoms to completely go away--I had to do "bladder retraining." I never did figure out what caused this, but I am interested in the responses you get because my doctor is thinking of switching me back to 6mp if I flare again while on Humira. I've been hesitant because, in my mind at least, there is some connection between 6mp and urinary problems.

This sounds similar to what i've been dealing with since being diagnosed with UC. Although I dont have to go to the bathroom alot, I do have a slight burning sensation most times when i urinate. I've never taken Azathioprine. How long have you had these symptoms bhb5764?

Stereo, do you have a yeast infection? Pred can cause those.

Possible, but nah, not too likely. I started getting symptoms with my bladder before starting medication and thats when it was at its worst. Discoloration and powdered texture, and since being on medication and supplements, that has gone away and some of the stinging/pain, but I still get discomfort here and there.

The only thing left to do is to see a urologist and check for prostate or anything else. =/

This bladder thing is interesting because I keep thinking I have a bladder infection, but three times I have been told I do not. I actually had a CT scan of my abdominal area and pelvis done not too long ago because I was having some pain and my bladder never seems to completely empty. I kept thinking I must have bladder cancer. Something is wrong. They found nothing. I am also very bad about ignoring the signs of needing to urinate.

When I went from 100mg to 150mg I had a severe reaction. My GI thought it might be panceatitis, so he did a cat scan. No pacreatitis, but the scan incidentally picked up the enlarged bladder. I was put on Flomax for 6 week but it hasn't help as much as hoped. I was waking up at night too, had burning, but no weak flow such as my urologist expected. Just the enlarged bladder. Stopping the Azathioprine seems to be helping.

The symptoms started when I upped the dose to 150mg and persisted when I reduced it to 100mg. So about 2 months.

I think the burning and pain are actually training me to retain urine. So I'm trying to force myself to go much more often. I've stop the azathioprine for now. I'll see how that goes.
