Birth Control While On UC Meds

My doctor told me I need to be on birth control because of the drugs she started me on.  Has anyone had issues with the pill while taking Prednisone or Prograf?  Most UC patients haven't heard of Prograf because it is only used in extreme cases from what I've heard.  But most UC patients know Prednisone....so any advice here?  I have heard there is always a possibility of my UC meds decreasing the pill's effectiveness.

I have not heard of Prograf but I took birth control pills while on prednisone and I continue to take them while I am on 6mp and Asacol. My GI wanted me on birth control pills when I started taking 6mp, though I was on them long before starting 6mp, and I have not had any problems. I have heard of women having healthy babies while on 6mp but I think it's considered a higher risk medication during pregnancy. I do not want children and I've never heard that UC meds would decrease the pills effectiveness. One thing I have heard is that people with UC are at higher risk for DVT.

Since we can often be placed on antibiotics there is a risk in combining BC pills with them, they can "weaken" the effect of the BC pill, so tread with caution in that regard...as far as other med used to treat IBD and BC pills, I'm not sure what, if any, interactions may happen.

Your doctor or pharmacist should know. I've never been on pred for UC but I don't think there is an interaction.

Thanks for the replies! My doctor didn't know for sure; she just told me there was a possibility of them interfering with each other.
