J-pouch vs K-pouch : What are the complications?

Hey all! Me again. Since posting my story about my emergency colectomy, this forum as well as the ostomy forum and J-pouch.org have helped to clear up many of the questions that I had.

But right now, another question sits at the tip of my tongue:

Do K-pouchers experience less pouchitis than J-pouchers?

I still fear my rectum as it was the starting point of my pancolitis, and I keep leaning toward receiving a K-pouch because I just want everything bad taken out!

Also, how many of you K-pouchers have had to have valve repairs?

I believe I could receive a collared pouch (though I cannot travel to FL/CA for a BCIR).

And lastly... are there any other complications of each pouch that I have failed to hear of yet?

Hi Theresa,

I honestly know nothing about the k pouch and I don't think you will get a lot of answers here since the majority haven't had surgery. That will probably be a tough statistic to find because way more people have a j pouch than a k pouch since the j pouch procedure has really replaced the k pouch. As far as pouchitis goes, my surgeon told me that about 40% of j pouchers will get it at least once. But it will not be widespread to have it chronically. A course of antibiotics will clear it up pretty quickly. I have 2 family members with long time j pouches and they said they have never had a bout of pouchitis. I havent either (knocking wood!). Pouchitis wasn't a concern for me because I knew my colon had to go and ANYTHING would be better than what I was was dealing with! Sharon on jpouch.org has a k pouch. Maybe PM her if you haven't already and she can give you some info about it. :)
