Anyone ever had a "viral" flare up?

I started flaring right around Thursday or Friday of last week. By Tuesday, my symptoms were very severe (15+ BMs a day w/ blood, LOTS of pain).

Now here's the weird part:

Starting Wednesday morning and continuing til now (Thursday evening) my symptoms have been decreasingly rapidly and now I feel normal. I have had almost no pain today and yet to have a BM.

I went to a GI today and he said he thinks it was a viral instance of colitis. He said sometimes bacteria or viruses can cause colitis short-term, which heals on its own. It can happen to anyone but UC patients are more susceptible to it. I've never heard of this but I've also never had a flare last 2-3 days and then get better with no meds.

Just curious if anyone has heard of this or experienced it?

Yes, it's normal for us. Every time my daughter catches a bug, immune system ramps up to address it, does so and attacks colon while at it. very stressful.

I had some intestinal bug over the weekend. For two or three days prior I had some of the worst gas and crampy feeling I've ever had. I was beginning to worry I was going to start flaring. Then on Saturday I went shopping with my son and started feeling like I would need to go soon. Luckily we got home when we did Massive D. I must have went to the bathroom 6-7 times in a three hour period and it was all liquid. Luckily no blood not even from the hemmies which by then were killing me. I had had a normal bm that morning. I upped my lialda that night and took some immodium, couldn't do the enema that night but did it the next two nights. My stomach felt horrible for the next two days but only had some as we like to call them wet farts. And now I'm competely back to normal and have been since Tuesday. My husband also had a bit of a bug the day before me but we just thought he had a problem with something he ate but guess not. I'm just so happy it wasn't the start of a flare.

Yes a few weeks ago I had a weekend bout with what I assume was a rhinovirus. Without specifics and graphics.. it was coming out both ends. The vomiting subsided after 24 hours and the worst of the big D finished after 48. However, while most ppl without UC would snap back quickly to solid stool, it took me about 4 more days of mushies to form solids again. For a hot minute I was beginning to get a bit worried it would flare me out.

Funny thing about viruses is that some will attack the cell nucleus and inject its own DNA to transcribe its proteins along with yours. In short, they make a viral factory out of your own cell. When the body recognizes this cell is no longer part of SELF it attacks it. Hmmm can anyone say Autoimmune response?

I do HOPE your doc did stool samples, because if you had a virus or bacteria, it will still be in your gut.

No, I've never had anything cause what you're describing except for a flare, which was progressive increase as well as progressive healing with meds.

It sounds like you just had a viral GI bug, which anyone can get. Remember that colitis just means "inflammation of the colon," and when a "normal" person gets a GI bug, their colon likely gets inflamed, and they therefore have "colitis."
