So last April I was diagnosed by colonoscopy with proctitis. I was given Rowasa enemas. They put me into remission. Unlike the rest of you, I wasn't given any maintenance enemas. But the GI doc told me that if I had a flare in the future, I would just need to call the office and they would prescribe more. I started having symptoms of urgency, mucous and a little blood-no diarrhea. I didn't have D even last year. I also didn't have D the two times I've had c.diff. I guess I'm unusual.
So anyway, I call the office last week and ask if I can do a stool sample. I just want to make sure I don't have c.diff. I figured if that was negative than I can come to the conclusion I have a proctitis flare. I did the sample and it all came back negative. They tested for parasites, blood, WBC's, RBC's and c.diff. The nurse told me the doctor woild like to see me but he doesn't have an appt for two weeks. She told me I can see the nurse practitioner. I said I'll try waiting for the doctor. I'm not a fan of seeing a NP. This seems to be the routine with specialty offices now. I hate it. This past weekend, I figured I should call today to tell them I want to see the NP because I'm concerned I'll be real sick on Easter if I don't get this straightened out. The office calls me back and tells me I can see the NP on Thursday. Really? I told them I thought that was ridiculous. What am I supposed to do until then? Plus most offices are closed on Friday since its good Friday. Also, I cannot tolerate generic Rowasa so the pharmacy needs to order the name brand for me. Nobody carries the name brand and it takes a few days to get in. So if I see the NP on Thursday, then I won't have the Rowasa until the following week.
I just don't understand this. I have a diagnosis. Why can't they stop playing games and just write me a script for the enemas. Whether I see a doctor or the NP I'm not going to agree to getting another scope. If this is a lifelong illness, I'm not going to get scoped every single time I have a flare. I'm so aggravated about all of this. The nurse told me she's going to ask the doctor if he'll write out a script for me in the meantime. Oh and by the way, the nurse told me they usually prescribe 7-10 days worth of enemas. This of course goes against anything I've heard on this board. I'm guessing its time to find another GI. I really wanted to before this flare but I get wrapped up in a lot of other stuff. I have 3 kids and one has special needs so I get busy with other doctors and specialists on a routine basis.
How do your GI docs manage your flares? Do they make you wait for appointments and meds?
