Since a very slow taper off about
8 months of prednisone, completely off Jan. 30th, I've been depressed, fatigued, anxious, lost 11 pounds, nauseous, dizzy, trouble concentrating, and a few other symptoms like night sweats thrown in. When I saw my GI 4/5, she suggested it was psychological and due to stress, and that in fact I was in remission, since I have seen no blood and my C Reactive protein blood test showed little inflammation. From the GI aspect, she's probably right.
I finally decided to consult with my PC (I have an HMO) last week and after looking at the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency, he ordered a ACTH stimulation test which I took yesterday. I just heard from my PC that the test results were borderline, and he is consulting with an endocrinologist.
Whether it turns out that I have adrenal insufficiency or something else, it's such a relief to finally have some physical acknowledgement that what I've been experiencing is not just psychological! It hasn't been easy to persist in finding some explanation for my symptoms, and borderline results are certainly not anything definite. I don't look forward to lots of more tests, either.
BUT I do want to feel better, and adrenal insufficiency may partly be the answer. I don't hold prednisone as a "devil" since it got me out of the flare and hospital a year ago. I think it would be helpful, though, for the medical system to be more integrated so that we as patients are seen as a whole person.
I am glad I found this thread and hope it helps anyone else with these symptoms.
