enema question

do you have burning after using the mesalamine enema the next day?  I do and nothing works. Do you thinki t is an allergic reaction?  It is aweful, and I only use it  1 or 2 times a week because of the pain.  If I don't use it the mucos and bloody stools come back.

Ideas?

No I've never had a burning feeling after the mesalamine enema. Some people however cannot tolerate mesalamines at all and others have a reaction to the sulfa suspension that is used in the enema. There is a a sulfa-free version of Rowasa that you could ask for. I would ask for that Rx in your case because the enema is sooo useful for reaching more area than the Canasa suppositories hit. Both are useful however.

I get some raw feeling extra bleeding after a few nights in a row of Rowasa. Not exactly burning, but I think I am mildly sensitive to the sulfa suspension. I started alternating with hydrocortisone. Currently I pre-mix about 70% Rowasa with 30% hydrocortisone. Evey now an then I do one night of only hydrocortisone. This seems to have addressed any Rowasa "harshness" issues.

Since VSL#3 DS, I am getting even better, andI think I can do rectal meds only 2x weekly. I might try the sulfa-free Rowasa (very expensive) since I could afford only 8/month. I would prefer to get off the hydrocortisone because 1) there is some absorption and I am trying to get off steroids, 2) I want to have it in reserve if there is a flare.
