Started taking prednisone a week before Xmas 60mg to fight off a bad flare.
All said and done with pred May 6th, but I started taking azathioprine 100mg about
a month before finishing the pred.
Currently still taking the azathioprine 100mg (about
2 months now) and doing ok colitis wise.
For about
the last month my hair is falling out, every time I run my hands through my hair I come away with about
five hairs in my hand, run my hands through again and
five more hairs etc. etc., I wash my hair and my hands are covered in my hair, I comb through my hair and my comb in full of hairs, seems to be a constant shed.
I can not tell if it's from the discontinuation of the prednisone or the start of the azathioprine because I don't want to stop the azathioprine to find out because I'm afraid of going back into
a flare again and back on the pred.
Does anyone have any experience with this situation?
Was it the discontinuation of the pred and eventually the shedding stopped and your hair grew back?
Was it the azathioprine and eventually your body got used to the aza and the shedding stopped and your hair grew back?
Was it the azathioprine and you lost all or most of your hair and it stayed that way because your still taking the aza?
Was it the pred and the shedding stopped but your lost hair never grew back?

I have heard from others on this forum that supplementing with extra folic acid and biotin, which are B vitamins, can help mitigate hair loss induced by meds.

Hairloss can follow the taper of Prednisone and also follow a flare-up from the body's response to the inflamation. I finished a 2 month course of Prednisone and my hair started shedding when I got to 10mg. I started back at 20mg now with a slower taper, so I'm sure the shed will last even longer. It usually lasts as long as you took the Prednisone, at least that's what my dermatologist told me and also is what I've experienced in the past.

Dr told me to take Magna B6 when my hair thinned due to the drugs.....It was cheap and it worked
