I have heard that some people can maintain remission on Imuran alone. What did your dr say?

My gi wanted me to stop asacol when I started 6mp but I ketp noticing symptoms when I tried decreasing asacol. I am not 100 percent sure that the symptoms were happening from the decrease or if it was coincidental but I definitely think you should decrease slowly and see how you do. Some people do great on imuran alone. I am happy I tried to taper off asacol even though I haven't had luck getting off of it yet. Hopefully it will work out some day... This illness requires a lot of trial and error, I don't think you doctor or anyone can tell you exactly how changes in you regimen will effect your specific case of uc.

I took a maintenance drug the entire time I suffered with UP. My GI doctor first had me on Asacol but felt it didn't treat the rectum as well as Colazal and switched me over to Colazal in 2000. In 2003, he started me on 6MP but I always took the Colazal along with it. The only thing I do credit Colazal with is keeping the ulcerations confined to the rectum. In all the twelve years I suffered with UP, it always remained in the rectum. Unfortunately, when the rectum goes, the colon has to go right along with it

I'm on Imuran alone, but you should ask your GI before you stop the Asacol, especially if you think it's causing problems. Then he can give you advice. If he's cool, he'll talk to you over the phone.

I take 2 400MG asacols tabs per day while on Imuran and ramp up the asacol while flaring.
It seems to work pretty well and I feel that I am minimizing side effects by going down to a low maintenance dose when I'm feeling well.
One of my biggest concerns is drug interactions so I keep the imuran at 100mg and the asacol at 800mg per day until the flares hit -then all bets are off.

I cam maintain remission on Imuran alone. If anything, Mesalamine exacerbates my flare symptoms so I avoid it (with my GI's consent).
Hope you feel better soon.
