Mesalazine and Reflux Oesophagitis (also treatment with nexium)

Hi All

Went to the dr yesterday for persistant upper abdominal pain - just under the sternum. Apparently it is my stomach and must likely reflux. I am on Nexium now to see if it helps and have just had some bloodwork done. Dr says it is probably a side effect of mesalazine (i have been on mezavant for a while now and salofalk before that).

Anyone familiar with Nexium? How long does it take to start working? 5 days of pain so far...i'm kinda over it :(

Has anyone else had similar problems? what has worked for you to relieve the pain?

Well, I can't see that happening because reflux is a mechanical dysfunction of the sphincter to the stomach. Salofalk cannot cause that.

If you're flaring, some stomach symptoms such as pain/gas, etc can be associated with rectal inflammation. 

I've not been on Nexium, but I do use Zantac...it took aout a week to see improvement in reflux discomfort.

You should be, however, on rectal meds...

Ive been having the same pain for the past month 24/7. its bad in the am and the more i eat the worse it gets through the day.. My Gi said it could be pancreatitis? she also mentioned some sorta fault with my oesophagus but that was ruled out with a gastrocopy on Monday. As was H-pyroli and stomach ulcers.

The blood tests should show up elevated enzymes (dunno their name) if its your pancreas. pancreatitis can be caused by medications and it associated with drinking excess alcohol. sorta anything that makes your liver work hard damages your pancreas also.

another cause of pain like that is gallstones. im getting an ultrasound to check for them and my pancreas. gallstones cause pain after eating that can last a few hours but if like me its 24/7 pain its not that.

So a blood test is a good start. stool sample 2nd and then a gastocopy and ultrasound.

I was prescribed colofak it but im not seeing results as yet..

I am not so convinced about that Q. I was on Asacol for years, never had heartburn, stomach pain nothing - but I think my reflux issues was due to taking Asacol all those years on an empty stomach. I mean it might not be the cause but I wouldn't rule it completely out.

UC_chick82, welcome to HW! :) I'm not on Nexium but I have been on Prilosec for about 5 years or so. If I recall right, it started working effectively at about a week.

heartburn cause is acid backwashed into the esophagus from the stonack....it's a mechanical dysfunction, the pain is caused by the acid.. I, personally, cannot see that being on it can cause the mechanics of the stomach sphincter to not work properly.

But, that's my opinion.

Hi, I have had the same pain at the abdonimal area and kind of sore throat due reflux. I'm taking asacol but I have not problem with it. I noticed today that the abdonimal pain has gone but I have a little discomfort at the right side.

Scratch that info, turns out blood work came back pancreatitis. I got sent to emergency yesterday and won't be home before monday. Obviously I am discontinuing azathioprine treatment. Back to the drawing board!
