Hi All!

It's been quite a while since I've logged on.  I've recently switched doctors and my UC has gone into remission for no apparent reason.  My first doctor seemed to feel that Probiotics were useless.  This new doctor, however, confirmed that VSL has been clincially shown to be very helpful.  (I knew this from all of you here at the forum!)  Anyway, he suggested I get it and told me it was only available online.  Well, I went on line and discovered that it's available at a local pharmacy.

Here's my question -  What's the difference between VSL#3, VSL#3DS, and just plain old VSL?  Also, are the packets better than the capsules?  I'm confused.

VSL#3 is what I take, there is no VSL (no #). VSL#3 DS is Double Strength hence the "DS". The DS is only available as a written prescription from a doctor and if your health insurance covers it is great. VSL#3 DS is the one that has clinical studies showing it's effectiveness for UC and the amount you take is high.

VSL#3 can be ordered directly from the manufacturer (no Rx needed) to be delivered in 2 day shipment to your home. Shipping used to be included in the price but I just re-ordered and they've started charging $7.50 for shipping. Oh well. I prefer ordering mine delivered rather than from a pharmacy because then I know how it has been handled in what temperatures. Some pharmacies get their stuff from uncooled warehouses which is bad for mild temp loving probiotics.

VSL capsules have less probiotics per capsule than the VSL#3 packets have.
Other probiotics available in drug stores are less expensive than VSL#3 but if you compare the cost per billion of probiotic in each dose then VSL#3 comes out ahead.

If you're in remission why start probiotics? I'm always of the "Ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset.

To sum up:
VSL#3 DS packet=maximum dose of probiotics
VSL#3 packet= 1/2 strength of DS
VSL#3 capsule= smallest amount of VSL probiotic
