So I have been flaring since November. I have had several 'near remissions' if you will, but they always let me down. Currently still having D, quite low energy...

On asacol 1600mg/ 3X per day, LDN 4.5 1x per day, supplements.

Maybe its time I go for a short course of pred? I guess I used to have it as a kid, get some puffiness that then went away... Im dreading taking it but I need my life back here before summer is gone.

"No" as in you don't want to take them or "no" as in you aren't taking them?

If it is the latter, you should get some. They could be just what you need to convert your "near remissions" into a true remission.

No, Im not. I have for a few weeks/months at a time, and no luck. Same thing im swallowing anyway..

have you tried predisolone in suppository form or enema form. i think its called cortifoam in the US. its called predsol and predfoam here in Ireland. Mite be worth a try b4 taking the oral pred with no puffy face.

yeah i was told so by my GI. he also said i could stay on them indefinately. infact there are the only thing im using atm.
some1 else mite chime in with a different opinion tho.

steroid enemas cannot be used indefinitely because they will thin the tissue in your rectum. You don't want that. There are fewer systemic side effects because absorption is poor, but it is not zero.

I would assume if you dont get the enema right on the spot, it does little good then?

What is "the spot?" A retention enema should treat the whole sigmoid colon and rectum.

"the spot" is where its inflamed.

Is everyone in agreement that systemic absorption of pred is poorer through enemas? I was under the impression absorption was good through the colon and that it was essentially no different in that regard than orally administered prednisone.

From the article: "The hydrocortisone enema is absorbed to some extent; the manufacturer has reported an absorption rate of 40%. In other words, if the enema contains 100 mg of hydrocortisone, then there is a systemic exposure of 40 mg, which is the equivalent of 10 mg of prednisone."
