Ran out of Prednisone

So I saw a new GI in Houston that put me on a short 1 month taper of 40 mg prednisone for "severe pancolitis". It worked fine at first, until I started tapering from 40 after a week and symptoms came back. I had to bump my dose back up because I decided the taper was too fast. Now The GI didnt give any refills on the prednisone and only gave exactly enough for his fast taper, so now I don't have enough to finish the taper, and I have zero prednisone left.

I've spent several days trying to get in contact with him but he refuses to give me a refill, and the other GI doc I've seen is out of town and can't be reached either. What do you guys do in this case, I can't stop taking the pred cold turkey obviously. I was able to get 40mg of emergency loaner pills from Walgreens but I don't know if they will do this for me until I get in to see my new doctor next Tuesday. Worst case scenario, go to emergency room and explain the situation and see if I can get a 1 week Rx?

You should have initially contacted the doctor when you bumped up the prescription....but...can you call him back for a prescription of rectal steroid enemas? That could help.

What dosage were you at when you ran out?

Yes...take your prescription bottle to the emergency, and hopefully they'll help with a taper prescription...yikes, that's really a sticky situation you're in.

I hope all works out....but it's a good reminder of us to make sure all changes in our prescribed medications has support from the doctor.

1. That is nuts. Call administration at the clinic to complain- they might make the dr stop being a jerkwad.

2. You should have called the dr before changing your meds. That is probably what he is having a hissy-fit about.

3. Get a new GI.

4. You can probably just go to urgent care or see a primary care physician to get the meds refilled. No need to spend the money and time in the ER.

do you have a med express clinic or medi help in your town? you know, not really a doctor's office, just an emergency clinic you go to when you can't get ahold of your doctor. i have always found these clinics helpful when my doctors don't want to prescribe me something.

After trying again with the GI's office, telling him I have an appointment with a new, different GI I would be switching to, he sent the Rx through. I think mostly it was dealing with leaving messages for the nurse and the back and forth.

Should have told him I was switching up my meds, but I honestly did not think I would be going back to him for any reason and was moving on. Sadly they sent the Rx digitally to a CVS in the wrong city so I am having to have the pharmacy transfer it over, but not really much of a problem.

Can you check with your primary care doctor? Any doctor can write it not just GIs!

It stuff like this that causes me to flare! It's bad enough to have this condition and not be able to get the meds we need!
