Ok, who else has issues with the bottle design on mesalamine enemas? I am lucky the bottle is thin and flexible enough to fold the end up to push more liquid out of the bottle! Why can't they design a more efficient bottle?
I remember purchasing fabric paint in the past that was housed in a bottle with an accordion-like design. You pushed the end of the bottle in as you used the paint, so the sides collapsed on itself until you got to the end of the bottle. I remember have no fabric paint going to waste that way. I hope you understand what I mean by "accordion-like" ... it would help us all using enemas be able to get all the contents out without wasting it.
Also, do any of you add ingredients to your mesalamine enemas? I have seen recipes for the vitamin E enemas as well as other therapeutic types that had l-glutamine or aloe vera ... would you think any of these would disturb the "integrity" of the mesalamine? I am considering at least the Vitamin E addition as I found the natural form in a bottled liquid so I would not have to cut into the capsules.
Your thoughts would be appreciated!

Terrible design! Hurts going in. Also I mix cort enemas and mesalamine enemas. GI said use both same time when I was having a bad flare. So as soon as I see blood I start mixing. Works well! I had 32 cm of infected colon. Needed the enemas. Faith

And if you're lucky like me and have pain in your hands and wrists that go along with flares, it is v.v. hard to squeeze that bottle. I agree.
I would not add anything to the mesalamine enema.

Faith - I am not sure how you are inserting but I angle the tip toward my belly button and then once it is in, angle it towards my back. It seems to work ... that and plenty of lube for the tip. Also, you might want to flex your sphincter muscle out like you are about
to push out something when inserting the tip of the enema bottle. When I am a bit sore, that also sometimes seems to help a little. Weird, I know ...

I'm going to try an enema for the first time tonight
The first thing I commented on when I saw the package was..."aren't these the coolest little accordian bottles ever!"
Maybe I've found something to be grateful for!

RH_Texas_Gal. I don't seem to have a problem with the hydrocort enemas only the melasamine ones. Crazy right! I wonder if the non generic ones are different. One is longer then the other. I'll try your tips on inserting. Thanks:)

Back up the truck ... Lodi - what kind of enemas did you get with that kind of bottle?

Rh, I have mesalamine in the enemas. The brand is Salofalk. I'm in Canada if that makes any difference...I see these are manufactured here too.

We also have Salofalk enemas in the UK. I would refuse to use anything else. Right now I'm having trouble inserting them properly. Far too inflamed for them or even suppositories. Any ideas?

becky..Yes, relax as much as possible. Put lubrication on your anus and on the nozzle.
Are you laying on your left side when in inserting, or are you with your butt in the air?

Wow, scarlet q, 7 doses cost a hundred dollars! I suppose that's why the GI asked me if I had a drug plan before he prescribed the enema. So do you use these regularly or just for a flare?
I think these are working for me but it's at a cost, I'm getting sore when I insert the enema now after just 8 nights and I feel stinging. I'm getting some hard to ignore abdominal pain, particularly when I lean over. I'm thinking the pain is more from the oral medication because it's from under my ribs to just above my belly button. Does anyone know if the medication in the enema also gets absorbed systemically?
I talked to the pharmacist about
my side effects again and he says they still might go away. These drugs seem like such a crap shoot. I want to understand what they are doing to my body so I can make an informed decision about
taking them. I find it scary that even the pharmacist can't explain this to me.

I treat the anus with organic virgin coconut oil. I just apply with a cotton swab and even insert a little bit in. This helps in the healing right around the area. I noticed a change after a few days of doing it. When I stopped, the insertion pain of the enemas started coming back so I continued it again. The coconut oil seems to have healing properties as it also helped get rid of a rash as well as mild eczema.
