If you're absolutely starving a while before bedtime, have a small snack.
I would think that with some foods, it can make you hotter during sleeping hours, making it not as easy to fall asleep or stay asleep.
I don't think it's BAD for the colon, you won't have it enter the colon while sleeping anyway, but you might have incidence of reflux more readily than if you haven't eaten for much longer before bedtime.
If I were on a consistent work schedule/sleep schedule, I'd not eat till I was full that short of time before going to bed.
Have something light at that time..really light...it won't have you feeling hungry. I think in part it's psychological if you're focussing on it...you can change your pattern of thinking eventually into accepting that change.
