Should I Go to the Hospital?

I've had UC for about 2 years now..  On Remicade.. Next infusion is not for 4 weeks still.

I am getting major intestinal spasms about 25 times a day (you know the ones that hurt so bad they make you drool)... Making me go to the washroom but very little stuff actually comes out..

Any point in going to the hospital? Think they can do anything for me or will they just put me back on prednisone?

Anyone who has had experience with this and went to the hospital to get it checked out let me know if they did anything for you.

Thanks for the reply.. My GI is on Holidays until the 7th.. Thats the only reason I was considering the hosptial. I will try and get my Family Doctor to make a prescription.

I use dicyclomine, which works well for me. I would only suggest the 10mg to start.

i'm pretty positive they will put you on IV prednisone and wanna do a colonoscopy and abdominal scans. are you on the highest dose of remicade there is?

are you eating anything? the less you eat, the less spasms you will have.

I don't think I am on a super high dose of Remicade since the last infusion was only my 3rd.. I am going to see my GI about upping the frequency I get it or the dose once she returns from holidays.

The eating thing I am discovering as I decided to skip lunch since I am nauscious with pain and the spasms are much less.

I have an appt with my family doc and am trying to get him to prescribe one of those 2 anti-spasm medicines previously methioned.

geez. it sucks the remicade hasn't kicked in yet. i only had 5 infusions but it never really put me in remission either. are you on other medications with the remicade or are you thinking about surgery if remicade doesn't work?

i was given bentyl and welchol to help with spasms and diarrhea and neither one helped a lot. i kind of felt like bentyl was a placebo. the one thing i noticed that is soothing to my gut is peppermint oil. also, taking a hot bath always helps my belly relax. if i could live in the tub, i would.

Well the remicade works.. But only for 5-6 weeks. Then I get rough again.. I am on Week 5.. I think if I go to 6 week intervals I will be fine or higher dosage.

Don't want to do surgery and didn't think I could since my colitis is all through out.. I could be wrong by my GI has never even suggested it.

The bath idea is good, I've used that one before very relaxing..

I tend to get cravings for mint all the time.. Maybe thats my body telling me how to help.

I know I've had cramps so severe in the past that they dropped me to my knees and had no choice to take myself to the hospital. Nothing I took would get rid of them. I didn't really have anything coming out of me during that time either. I've never felt cramps like that before. I've been on the highest does of remicade (10mg/kg) and get it done in the shortest time allowed (every 6 weeks). Maybe try resting your gut with a more liquid diet. That's usually the first thing I get started on in the hospital. My GI always told me it's not unheard of to take short term prednisone to bridge the gap when the remicade starts to wear off and the time to your next infusion. I know I've done it as prednisone works extremely well for me. Usually within a few hours it calms things down. Unfortunately it's hurt other areas of my body and I can't stay on it long.

If you are feeling so terrible then you should go to the ER. If your don't want to go to the hospital, doesn't your GI have someone covereing for him while he is out? Also, yes its true sometimes they put you on prednisone for awhhile until remicade kicks in fully.

I have never heard of someone not being a candidate for surgery because UC is all throughout. That makes no sense. Sometimes GIs feel like they have failed as doctors if they are unable to control your UC with all of their drugs. So they oftentimes won't discuss surgery until it may get so bad that you end up in the hospital bleeding to death.

And bentyl works good for spasms, just made me very loopy and tired. And baths, as hot as you can tolerate them. And brain power, try to do something to get your mind off of it.

Well my family doctor would not prescribe me any Anti-Spaz medicine.. He recommended I go to the Hospital and try and get a GI to give it to me.. Knowing that the hospital will take probably 8 hours or so I've decided to put myself back on Pred which I still have a bunch of. My GI always starts me on 40mg.. With a 5mg taper each week.. Has anyone been put on a faster taper?

Is there any chance a burst dosage would work? For asthma flares I do this: 60mg/50mg/40mg/30mg/20mg/10mg/5mg stop. That's 7 days of pred.

kyle, that EXACT same thing happened to me. my GI doctor had been out on vacation and i wanted to get a script for bentyl. i went to my regular doctor thinking it would be no big deal and she said "oh, im nervous i'll get in trouble with your GI." she acted like she wasn't allowed to prescribe it. i've since stopped going to her since i can't afford to drop a co-pay and not get treated.

i hope the prednisone can give you some sort of relief.
