I was watching this movie about
a guy having sex with everyone, and I thought this guy is gonna get sick. So then the question popped in my head. Do people with UC who then get infected with HIV/AID's lose their colitis symptoms? I know this seems a strange question. I'm wondering if anyone has looked into this.

strange question. why would we look into it?
I think you and the guy who drank the fecal probiotic should discuss this one.

Nope, it never entered my thought processes. But it does make sense; however, I would never be willing to try to find out if it does.

It's possible. AIDS is basically auto immune deficiency, so probably your immune system wouldn't be strong enough to attack the colon anymore.

one of my previous gastros was a huge AIDS researcher. he wouldn't talk about
it during appointments, but i knew he and his partner were very interested in digestive diseases correlating with AIDS.

The question does ponder the collision of a kind of hyper-immune (autoimmune) response with hypo-immune (immune deficiency). You could also ask the same question about
RA or other autoimmune disease. But I don't think the question is very useful. FOr one thng the hyper-immune response in UC is not just a ramped up immune system, but also the crucial mis-identification of host tissue as legitimate targets.
A real exploration would require looking at what part of the immune system HIV virus impairs, and through what mechanism. This would be contrasted with various models of what part of the inflammatory response (immune system) that is thought to be disrupted with UC, and thinking on why host tissue gets attacked.
What is needed in the case of both HIV and UC s a complex and detailed view of the immune system. What the question invites it the most simplistic gross comparison of hyper vs hypo. To this extent, even contemplating the question (as phrased) invites lower understanding of both diseases.

Um.....GROSS!!!
For the heck of it though I'll give 2 cents here....
Why would it cure UC??? UC is a result of a malfunctioning immune system, not necessarily because it's either over or under active (according to researchers) it simply doesn't function properly...getting AIDS on top of having UC wouldn't cure your UC, you'd just have two illnesses is all.

Yeah, because living with the stigma of AIDS and / or dying would be sooooo much better than living with UC.

I think meds have come alot further with AIDS than with IBD when you consider IBD has been around over a hundred years and AIDS hasn't been around anything close to that (early 80's). Many people with AIDS are living long and very full lives, not trying to downplay it in any way because as we all know, there is no good disease to have.
