I was diagnosed in 1995 at 25years old. I've had it for 17 years now.
I had diahrea for 5 years before being diagnosed after a trip to Mexico I was never the same.

I had UC for about 10 years (from birth till 10 years of age). At age 10, I had my ileostomy surgery and have had that for 35 years now. UC is a distant memory and I'm soooo glad I had surgery.

Somedude- A year and a half? That explains a lot. Every time I read your posts about crapping your pants, I'm like, "I would never be able to live like that... Why hasn't he opted for surgery by now?" But here I've been living with UC for the majority of my life... I would be in a much different place mentally if I'd only been diagnosed a year and a half ago. Makes a lot more sense now, still looking into all your options...

4 years, diagnosed at age 44. Seems most diagnosed at younger age, guess I should be thankful I wasn't!

Somedude, back then the j pouch surgery was in it's infancy. They initially left my rectum and anus intact in the hopes I could have a j pouch but they were too diseased and were removed a year after my ileo surgery meaning no hope to have a j pouch. Nowadays, they'd probably just scrape the rectal lining out but back then they didn't realise they could do that.
It doesn't matter. I'm extremely happy with my ileo :)
