Need some Advice

Hello!

I am new to this forum and wanted to get some advice. I have been struggling with UC for 4 years and am now on Humira after remicaide failed to work. So far the Humira is working well but I would like to not depend on this drug forever.

Does anyone have any tips on dietary changes that I can try? I have been reading about the SCD diet and the Paleo...it is just overwhelming for me to figure out where to start.

I think diet can control UC in some but not in others. Unfortunately, everyone has to find their own path and everyone is different. I doubt there are two people here who are treating virtually the exact same way. In my case I found that diet change does very little and I suspect there are cumulative effects. By that I mean that I have eaten cheddar cheese and other dairy products and had to run to the bathroom quickly with diarrhea. Sounds like a good reason to eliminate dairy, right? Wrong. After more experimentation I discovered that about 80% of the time I ate those very same products that had given me trouble before I not only didn't have any problems but I seemed to do better. I'm not quitting eating something just because it gives me problems 2 out of 10 times. Who knows? Maybe it is because I ate those things in combination with something else that caused the problems. I think too many people here eliminate too many things just because it had given them a problem once and don't even realize that there was more going on there than they realize. Diet definetly helps some but in those where diet does help a different diet works for them than worked on someone else. I'm really sorry but the truth is just because one diet worked for one person doesn't mean that very same diet is going to work for you. There are no easy answers to this for you or for the doctors. That is why it can be so confusing and overwhelming.

akweaver, i would definitely give paleo diet a try. i am reading a book called the paleo solution by robb wolf and i love it. it is a huge change from my vegan diet but i don't mind it since my daily cramping has gone down as well as my BM's (from average of 12-15 a day to 6-7). i'm on day 5 and am planning on doing 30 days to see if it really makes a difference. healing will take a while, i'm sure, since my whole colon is affected. i have been able to work out for the past 3 days (just for maybe 5-10 minutes) but that was IMPOSSIBLE for me for the last 4 months. i have way more color in my face and just feel like my head is clearer. i'm not taking naps every day because of exhaustion. geez, i sound like i get commission for promoting it!! haha i don't mean to. i will say that pain is my main symptom and that is still there during my BM's but i also blame that on my biopsies from my colonoscopy 3 weeks ago.

i just think if you are willing to try it, you have nothing to lose besides your colon. my doc put in an order for humira last week because i was so bad off. i go to see her next week and will hopefully be able to say that i don't need it.
