So I've been on the cortisone enemas for straight 2 weeks now but I'm still seeing blood in my stools. It's well formed and all and I'm happy about
it. But I'm still having mucus and blood.
I wanted to taper cortisone from today on and go with Rowasa on the days I'm not taking the steroid enemas.
What can I do to make the blood disappear? Should I taper or stay on the steroids for one more week?

I started cortenemas last month, did it for about
10 days but still was seeing blood... Even though I started rowasa and canasa...
Started them up again, I am on day 13 and have not seen blood - bright red that is- for about
4 days.
Just very tiny speck of maroon stain about
2 days ago...
I think I stopped too soon last time....
Maybe you should wait another week?

I think I'll do that. I really want to beat this flare down.
Thanks

I agree, definitely wait another week to see if the blood goes. But I wouldn't stop the steroid e's until you see no blood or very little blood. I don't think you should go cold turkey on the steroid e's after that though. You might rebound. But maybe do a taper while alternating days with the Rowasa. One night steroid e, next night Rowasa for a week or two, than go to every second night with the steroid e's and Rowasa in between etc.

Yes, I had in mind to switch the enemas every night. One night Cortisone, one night Rowasa. But yes I'd think I should stay on the steroids for another week.

This night I had some bm but I was shocked when I saw the amount of blood on the paper. Funny thing is that I saw some left over from the enema coming out right before that. Am I doing something wrong? I take the enema before sleep, laying on the left side and then go to sleep. I'm also taking Mesalazine orally. I don't want to take steroids orally anymore :(

Do you have any hemmies that perhaps you are aggravating with the enema insertion?

How can I find out? I tried to look but couldn't see anything bad.

I have internal hems and one slightly on the outside. I didn't know I had the internal one (that one showed up before the external) until I had a scope. But when it was aggravated, it sort of hurt when I used an enema or it felt like there was a resistance. Do you get that sensation?

I also wanted to mention, if you have rectal inflammation, sometimes it helps to squeeze the enema before inserting, so a little med comes out, and continue squeezing before fully inserting. This will help coat that rectum more efficiently.

That's good advise. I never thought of that. Thanks!
When I was scoped my GI would have seen the hemmie right? Since he never mentioned anything should I assume I don't have any? Also the blood was mixed with mucus...

Also, if you suspect a hemmie, put extra lube on the enema tip before inserting-- something water-soluble like K-9 jelly. / Old Hat (31 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Should I continue with cortisone enemas until I don't see blood anymore or switch 1 night cortisone 1 night Rowasa next week? I was planning on switching next Wednesday.

Ok I wanted to taper off in 2 days but I just had a very bloody bm and I admit I'm panicking. Should I continue the steroid enemas until I see no blood or still taper them off and use Rowasa inbetween from 2 days on? Why were the steroid enemas working so well the first time but not anymore?? Am I doing something wrong or did I get immune to it or did my flare just get too bad? Please help :(

Which enemas are you on? What's the dosage? How long have you been taking them?

Andrina, call your doctor and ask their advice. I personally would keep doing the hydrocort enemas until you see no blood.

I'll call my GI or the nurse in a moment. I most likely stay on them until it's ok. Please cross your fingers for me that it will take effect soon :(
