Yay your almost done! Mine will be done long after the initial extraction. Kinda glad since its going to cost a ton of money and my insurance is being a pain since the extraction was done before the insurance started. My husband started a new job in August. Funny thing is-Its the same darn company. Grrr.

Sheesh, I had two implants about ten years ago, and really don't remember it being such a long drawn-out process! That said, I'm really glad I had it done because I haven't had any trouble with them at all. Hope you have a great outcome in the end.

I think it depends on what tooth they are replacing Judy. My first one didn't take as long but these two I am having done are bigger teeth and they told me it takes the jaw longer to heal. I'm almost to the point where I am so used to not having the teeth there why bother? LOL

Thanks for good wishes, Judy, plus it's always great to have you back on UC forum. As Sherbear says, some implant sites require more time to heal than others. The oral surgeon told me the process goes faster if they can implant a long rod. In my case he had to use the shortest available rod to avoid hitting the sinus on upper left-- so he waited 6 months to insure proper bonding with bone before adding the healing abutment. Hip-hip, hurray! Sherbear, I finally got the crown/permanent abutment installed yesterday!!!!!!!! It took about an hour between the actual fiddling in my mouth + allowing some time for the cement holding crown to set. The permanent abutment gets screwed in all the way to the base of the titanium rod! Dentist told me not to chew on it for 24 hrs, but I'm going to give it extra days to recover from today's manipulations. I'm sooooooo happy to have the space filled in after 366 days that I don't mind chewing on the opposite side for a while longer. Dentist wants me to return in 2 weeks for a final check on this project. Can you believe that I still don't go in for the healing abutment till March 13th? Which hopefully won't be too big of a deal for a chicken dental patient like me. The dentist who does everything after the healing abutment said I would have to wait a month for it to heal. Geez. Its already been almost a year since the teeth were pulled.

Yes, alas, I can believe it! Hang in there. It took 366 days for my premolar job from extraction to installation of final crown. Which of your teeth are involved this time? / Old Hat (32 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Oh I don't even know what they are. Molars of some kind I think but not all the way back. Two on the bottom right. You would think with all the dental work I have had done over the years that I would know all the names of my teeth and which ones I still have left and which ones are real and which aren't. Nope not really. LOL

From your description it sounds like premolars are involved. I know what a drag waiting is. If these teeth are side-by-side, though, your dentist probably wants to give them a couple weeks of extra time to rest after installing healing abutments-- to keep the rods from shifting position. Then at the follow-up appointment he will temporarily attach an extension abutment to each rod that reaches down to the base-- that's how they calibrate the size of the permanent abutment you need from the dental lab. So giving your gum tissue more time to firm up will make it safer to manipulate that extension abutment: my take on it. I don't really mind. In fact at this point I'm so used to not having any teeth there that it doesn't bother me. At one point I had to decide if I was going to go through with it. Cost has always been an issue. Oh well pushing forward. Whats another few months?

The cost is outrageous, but you're still young so a successful implant job definitely will benefit your oral health over time. Plus there's a lot of scientific evidence that good oral health helps prevent problems with other body parts, including the heart. Then, too, when you get right down to it, auto repairs cost a fortune, and we're surely more deserving of good physical care than a car, right?
