I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the fact that here we have hard science supporting "leaky gut" as a factor in IBD pathogenisis, after years or decades of ridicule heaped on the concept of "leaky gut" by mainstream docs. Heck, ten or more years ago it was extremely rare for probiotic therapy not to be ridiculed by GI's.

Leaky gut seems to be getting some newfound respect.  As I've been trying to figure out new and exacerbated joints pains, some of the literature points in that direction.  The neurologist I saw definitely felt my joint (and muscle) pains are leaky gut related rather than mechanical or something else.

Things change.  When I was taking tumeric several years ago, a doctor I didn't much get along with scoffed, "like the spice?!"  (I wish I had a picture of his face when he mentioned that 5ASAs are just like aspirin and I said, "like willow bark?!")  Anyway, not many years later and I see turmeric touted just about everywhere as an anti-inflammatory.

Do you know if the journal which the study is published in is accessible to anyone? I asked my doc about leaky gut earlier this year and he dismissed it completely, I felt so dumb for asking about it. I don't know if it would be useful to bring in the study or not. If my conventional doctor doesn't believe there is such a thing, there must not be a treatment for it.

It's so hard not to be discouraged.

It would also be interesting to know how they induce leaky gut in the mice; I wonder if they feed them gluten confused

Veteran Member (aka Seconder) , did your neurologist have any advice for your leaky gut? blush

Pro,

Even some docs won't think of probiotics. My GI won't talk about it, other then to say he won't prescribe it for me. That it's worthless.

However, it is good that some doctor's will consider leaky gut. Better than nothing really.

As forward thinking as she may be, Lodi, the neuro punted to the GI.  She didn't want to interfere with what the GI's doing, which I understand.

Lodi: This is the best I can find,if you really want the paper email the author explain you have IBD

cannot access the journal, and ask for the PDF. Thank them for their time and effort,when I do this they

always send a copy.

I'm going to ask my doctor if he appreciates or cringes when a patient attempts to take an active roll in their health.

I do ask a lot of questions to the doc but my intent is to understand the reasons for the decisions 'we' are making to treat my body, not necessarily questioning his treatment. It's such an odd relationship to allow them so much control which is especially the case in Canada where we don't have the ability to make a choice of who to see. Our system is second to none for acute stuff and trauma but not for managing or preventing chronic problems.

Very interesting, Old Mike.

L-Threonine amino acid helps with intestinal mucosal epitelial barrier, that's the reason it's part of my regimen.
