I'm a Crohnie but have severe problems with my rectum. Chronic proctitis was confirmed and since March 2011 I have been in constant flare ups. I have been on a variety of rectal meds: budesonide enema, pentasa enema, flagyl suppositories and pentasa suppository. I can't tolerate flagyl as it causes non stop vomiting and nausea and the pentasa suppositories cause cramps. So, these two are out of question. Lately, budesonide enemas caused me non stop d so I ended up taking pentasa enema before bedtime. I also take pentasa granules 4g/day. Now, I'm having a narrowed rectum. Whenever I need to have a bm, I just insert glycerin suppositories and then d follows and then it becomes closed again. And if I need to have another bm, I have to take a glycerin suppository and so on. When I try to insert the suppository, I feel the
opening of my rectum to be very narrow. I also encounter this difficulty when I take pentasa enema.
My GI told me before that I have to live up w it and he will never let me ungerdo any kind of dilation. Should I leave it like that? The swelling of my rectum annoys me and it has become a pain in the neck. I know that people can get rectal strictures. The colorectal surgeon once told me that I have anal stenosis due to scarring but when I was scoped at the beginning of this year, no strictures were found; only narrowness as my GI could not insert the scope easily. He used to report this since my first scope.
My question is: Is there something I can do to prevent strictures or would it be my luck and so I should not worry
.
Thank you very much.
