How much does surgery cost in the US with insurance?

I'm not saying I want to do it anytime soon but I'm curious. For those who had surgery, how much is the out of pocket cost? I have insurance with deductible. If it is too much I might just go back to Germany for surgery and come back if it ever comes up.

Jpouch surgery is covered by insurance. All elective surgery means is that it wasn't an emergency surgery; it does not mean it's not warranted. My jpouch surgery 11 years ago cost me $10.00 out of pocket. I had the top surgeon on the west coast and my insurance paid for it, elective as it was.

Andrina, there are many, many different insurance companies and each of them have many, many different policies. It depends on what kind of policy you have and with which company. It could cost you anywhere between $0 to thousands of dollars. How much is your deductible? Generally, if you haven't used any of your deductible the most you would usually pay would be the full amount of your deductible but with so many different policies you can't really ask that question here and get a correct answer. It might help if you told us which insurance company you have and which policy you have, including your deductible amount. Then maybe you could get lucky and find someone on this site with similar insurance and get a close estimate. There are also different deductibles on the very same policy such as in network and out of network. You might be able to track down a rough estimate through your GI or a surgeon as they can contact your insurance company and find out.

When I got my ileo it cost me about 4k out of pocket. The total hospital bill was close to 80k! When I had this adhesion surgery the bill was close to 50k and I paid 2k. Our first insurance was an 80/20 with a 5k cap max, the one we have now is an 80/20 also but with a 2k cap max. If you are thinking of geting surgery either head back to germany or get the best plan you can!

Andrina: Since insurance plans even within the same company are so different there is no way you can get an idea. Like I said you could pay anywhere from zero to thousands of dollars. It all depends on your specific insurance company and your specific plan from that company. If I were to have my surgery today it would cost me zero. If I had it this coming up January it would cost me $6000 dollars. The way my particular plan works is I pay 100% of the costs up to my deductible amount of $6000 and after my deductible is met the insurance pays 100% of the costs and I pay zero. There are dozens and dozens of different insurance companies, all of which each have dozens and dozens of different plans. The only way you can even get a ballpark idea is to know what insurance company you are going to have and what specific policy you have with that particular company. After that, there are still several variables to consider such as if your doctors or hospitals are in your network or out of the network. It's not as simple as other countries but overall the care is much better in this country.
