Up to how many pentasa suppositories can one take/day?

I saw the colorectal surgeon yesterday and he told me that the acute fissure started to heal but that dull stabbing pain in my rectum is due to proctitis. So, I have to take metronidazole suppositories for 5 days ( more than that would cause me nonstop vomiting and I asked him to take zofran 8mg injections if vomiting hits). He and my GI agreed that if I can tolerate pentasa suppositories I have to take them instead of the enemas. If not, then it is enough that I take pentasa sachets 4g.
Things went fine yesterday and I could tolerate the suppository. However, I'm thinking of increasing the number of pentasa suppositories as I feel that this dull pain won't be relieved easily. I take 1g before bed time and the 4g oral ones.
Of course, I won't do it w/o referring to the surgeon but is it negotiable?

I think 3 suppositories a day would be fine. Once in the morning, once during the day when you can afford to lay down for a few moments and then at night. Even with 3 suppositories a day, you are only getting 3g mesalamine while the enemas, if administered all of it, supplies 4g mesalamine at once. Ask about cortifoam as well. I used it and felt immediate relief of tenesmus and pain very low in the rectum.

Why would you be able to tolerate suppositories and not enemas? I think they sell 2g enemas in some places or you could use a half of a 4g enema. Using tons of suppositories doesn't seem like it would be easy to remember. I believe they have mesalamine foam in some places which may be an option for you? If you can tolerate mesalamine enemas, could you try cortifoam?

I've never used more than 3 1000mg suppositories in a day. They were easier for me to retain when I was flaring and if I went ot the bathroom after inserting, I would insert another. my GI writes my script for 2 a day. I would think you could use more considering enemas are 4000mg.

I am sorry to hear that you injured yourself. The things we go through with this illness... I hope you're able to use suppositories without further harming yourself. Make sure you lubricate them well before inserting, that helps me a lot when I have a fissure.
