stool sample came back negative, continue flagyl?

What a bummer and I don't notice any improvement on flagyl either . i have major nausea. Do I stop it mid stream, can I stop it mid stream? Only been on it for three days.

I see my GI next week Weds and I'm going to ask about enberal.

I was having BAD cramping, like every hour as if I was going to go diarreah and sometimes I did and sometimes I did, but I felt like I haven't been right since I got out of my fissure surgery over a month ago.

But at the same time I was coming off colazal because 5asa weren't doing much for me. But now I'm thinking maybe they were??? at least they were giving me mushy stool, now all I have is diarreah.

so confusing this stupid dis-ease!

I don't think that negative stool samples would be a reason to quit flagly. It's not thought to help with UC because of something a stool sample will pick up; at least, that's my understanding of it. However, the extreme nausea is a reason to quit taking it. My GI prescribed an antibiotic when I was first diagnosed (I can't remember if it was flagly or cipro) and I just quit taking it due to nausea.

Why are you asking about enbrel? I don't think it's been very widely studied in controlling IBD at all. Remicade and Humira are much more commonly used.

Hi FG, Well enberal is a once a week shot. What if I take humira and I feel like complete crap, that last for two weeks. That was the only thinking I had about it.I feel sicker than a dog right now on flagyl! I'm feel shaking, out of myhead feeling.

I think I would continue. Flagyl makes me feel awful. I had headaches, nausea, metal taste in my mouth... I took the full course regardless. I always feel like, if a week on this horrible stuff *might* do something positive for my condition, it's worth it! Unfortunately, I don't thiink it had too much positive benefit for me but it didn't hurt. I would try it again if I had a flare up and nothing was working for me.

I would lean toward getting off the flagyl, especially if it not only isn't doing anything for you but is actually making you worse. It is not a drug like prednisone where you absolutely can't just quit cold turkey. Of course the prevailing wisdom of taking antibiotics is to finish the whole bottle but that has different science behind it. That is assuming you have a bacterial infection and if you were to quit too soon you might not get rid of your infection and could cause the bacteria to mutate into an antibiotic resistant form. But, if you don't have a bacterial infection in the first place that scenario doesn't hold true. I personally think it is a waste of time for you and is making you worse.

It does sound like you were started on the antibiotic on the working theory that there was some sort of infection (like c.diff) on top of your UC. While there are some thoughts on moderating UC by manipulating the gut microbiota with antibiotics, I do not get the impression that is what your doc was trying to do.

why not ask the doc if the negative result means you can stop taking a med that makes you nauseous?

I have heard several people report that they got off 5asa because it did not put them into remission. Did not put me in remission either. But, I have some evidence it cleared my right and transverse colon, and I think it is moderating the UC in the left colon. Some benefit is better than no benefit.

Thanks all, I just stopped it, it was making me nausous and I couldn't breathe so well (anxiety) and run down. I've been good so far today, I'm using the candida freedom and that seems to be helping. I finally slept for more than two hours in a row last night and woke up by myself and able to get out of bed ok. we'll see how tomorrow goes
