So I've been having a lot of sporadic pain in my right big toe. At first I thought it was arthritis because I broke that toe several years ago in two places. I went to the doc and had it x-rayed. It turns out I have the beginning of a bunion. It bothers me a lot, especially if I turn the wrong with my foot. I have a hard time finding shoes that don't hurt. And walking, even with stiff shoes and a bunion protector, hurts after a while. Sometimes it just aches when resting.

My doc said it was up to me as to when I decide to go for a bunionectomy. But I'm afraid that if I decide to have surgery on my foot that it will be worse off. Has anyone here have the bunionectomy? If so, what were your results?

I have a pretty bad bunion and I am not ready for surgery. My mom had her bunion repaired when she was in her 60s and it was a long recovery, including no driving for weeks. My bunion determines which shoes I can buy but I can still find some that will work. It is getting harder. A friend who's a DR says the deciding criteria should be that you cannot find any shoes that will fit without pain.

I need a big toe box in a running shoe to keep pressure off my toe. Pumps need to have a cut so that the front of the shoe completely covers the joint (many are cut so they go straight across the middle of this joint and cause a lot of pain, even with just little pressure). High heels are generally not going to work at all.

I'm leaning more toward surgery to get this corrected now than when it really starts to get bad, mainly because its affecting my walking gait which in turn has been aggravating my Sacroiilitis.

But like I said, I'm afraid it will be worse and than there is the recovery time, not to mention I react badly to narcotic pain killers (I'm severely allergic to all forms of codeine, other narcotics make me vomit and lowers my blood pressure).

So in this instance I'm darned if I do and darned if I don't.

I agree that it complicates the SI issue. My worse bunion is on my left foot - it's my right SI that always hurts. I am sure they are connected. I'm not having surgery any time soon because I cannot be without my car!

I had a bunionectomy 4 years ago. Could not find shoes that were comfortable. They were always rubbing. It looked awful! It used to throb.
Was told by others how painful it was to have done. I thought it was a piece of cake. I was put totally out with a nerve block. Didnt feel a thing for 18 hours. Took a total of 2 pain pills. Was in a boot shoe for 6 weeks, walking. No big deal! I have a tiny one on my right foot. If that should get bad I will not think twice to have tthat one done.
I wear flip flops now. Would not think to ever wear them before operation. I would have it done if I was you:)

There are also different types of operations. I did not have all my toes broken. They shaved off the bone and put in screws to hold toe in place. I think the longer you wait the harder the operation.

I was having the pain you describe from a bunion forming in my right foot. The protector cushion didnt help because the added bulk created pressure. I have stayed away from narrow toe shoes like cowboy boots, added arches to flats, and rarely have pain now. My doc had good advice, that you just have to figure which shoes won't hurt and know which ones will.
I hope you can find relief. I know some folks have had good luck with surgery, too.

Honestly I don't even know how I got it. I NEVER wear narrow toe shoes, I hate them because they have never fit me right. In fact, I always buy wide sizes. I can't wear heels because of pinched nerve in my left foot that I have had for 25 years. I wear flats with heel and arch support inserts. I heard that sometimes they can be hereditary. If that is the case, I believe my mom had them.

Red - have only worn comfortable shoes, never narrow. Mine is hereditary . Everyone one my dads side have bunions. Stomach problems from moms side ,bunions from dads.

Something is going get me sooner or later! The big C is on both sides. Terrible Genes!!!!!!!!!!!!! Makes me very nervous. Doing the best I can! Wish you can fix everything like that stupid bunion :)
