Hi,
I use them, although I'm guilty of forgetting about them until I need them. I'm working on this...
How long can I keep them in? It depends, and varies each time I use them. When flaring, anything between a few seconds and an hour, and the 'evacuation' causes such awful cramps, i'm scared to put myself through it again by repeating again the same night. Sometimes it's easier if I've had a bowel movement in the evening and sometimes I haven't had an evening BM and I can keep the foam in all night. No right or wrong answer. I think an hour is better than nothing.
If you are really struggling, maybe only use one squirt of the can?
My tips: shake the can quite vigourously for 20 seconds. I use at night just before getting into bed. I keep the tip inserted for a little while until the initial urge to evacuate passes (deep breaths) and then remove, dispose of the rubbish and jump straight into my bed on the left hand side. I use wet wipes and anti-bac gel to cleanse my hands. Read or watch TV but try to keep calm and focus on somthing other than you are trying to keep the foam in. At my worst, it was very difficult to try and forget but as you get better at keeping the enema in, the urge to immed. evacuate does pass.
I've been using nightly for the last week and there was only one night where I could only keep it in for 30 mins, the rest of the week I retained for the whole night so it really does vary. Just try to keep it for as long as you can and try to realx, when I first started using it really was a case of mind over matter.
Good luck!
Oh and if Quincy is reading - thank you - this is my first post but it is your many posts about the use of enema's that made me 'suck it up' and get over any initial concerns about using them. I do think they helped keep me out of a flare last year and I really do need to remember to use them more regularly, esp as I am lucky enough to have access to the foam enema's
