That was my number one theory for quite a long time, although over the last few months it has moved down from that top spot. I have a few more clues than the average UC patient because my UC symptoms began while I was in the hospital for what everyone thought was a severe sinus infection. I had a sore throat, migraine headache, and uncontrollable fever which they treated me for in the hospital with broad spectrum antibiotics. I had virtually no UC symptoms before qoing to the hospital and started the diarrhea while still in the hospital. The doctors didn't think much of it, chalking it up to the antibiotics. They switched my antibiotic and also put me on Florastor. My other symptoms got better and they released me, although I was still having the diarrhea.
Long story short, shortly after my release it was discovered that I did not have a sinus infection at all, but had Mono instead. I was soon diagnosed with UC after testing negatively twice for C-Diff due to the antibotics. I began searching online and came accross a few people that had come down with UC at or around the time of being diagnosed with Mono. I continued searching and found medical evidence that several UC patients had been found to have the EBV residing in their colons in biofilms. Sorry but I don't have any links to that stuff anymore. If you do a search for EBV and ulcerative colitis you should come up with a bunch of different stuff. Since there is no known way to erradicate the EBV from your body I started searching for natural treatments which would at least fight the EBV. That is where I came up with Monolaurin and DGL. Monolaurin has been proven to kill the EBV in lab dishes but I don't think there is any actual proof of what happens in the body. Unfortunately the DGL lacks the one ingredient in licorice which also fights off the EBV. Taking straight licorice can have some severe side effects. These treatments plus VSL seem to have made me improve although I no longer have EBV as my number one suspect. I am concentrating more on the broad spectrum antibiotics causing an overgrowth of Candida in my system, causing a leaky gut. I have found that my most problem foods were all high in histamines and discovered that I may have a histamine inolerance due to all of this. It has been proven that UC patients have a lower amount of the digestive enzyme diamine oxidase, which counteracts histamine. Since taking that digestive enzyme as a supplement at mealtimes I have had a dramatic improvement from bad experiences from my problem foods. I was also going through some very major stress at the time my UC started and stress can also cause the release of a lot of histamine. I'm hoping that by continuing to take this enzyme before every meal that I will continue to improve.
