I am on them since diagnosis on August 2012 and believe they help quite a bit. The affected area on me is rectal and sigmoid. My GI said the enema can reach up to the splenic flexure of the colon (left side of the colon), if that area is affected in you and you are able to tolerate the mesalamines well, I think they are a great first line option. Anytime you can stay away or at least minimize the use of medications with higher side effect profiles like steroids or immunosupresants it is a great thing. Good luck.
