Ok so even with 40 mg pred I'm still flaring. I really don't feel like going up to 50 or 60 even my GI agrees. So this weekend I start SCD again. I will also try to get LDN very soon as well. My GI referred me to someone who might prescribe it if my other appointment won't go well. I hope I'm not running out of options because I really want to get out of this flare if possible without cutting anything out :(

good luck, andrea! are you doing the intro diet? that was hard for me. i don't do well with no carbs at all. i was constantly dizzy, lightheaded, and couldn't think straight.

I won't do intro I just want to eat what's allowed. I'll do soup and broth in between.

"i finally got my shipment of chicken feet in the mail. "
that is too funny - for some reason my mind flashed on the horse head in the bed in i think one of the godfather movies - this would be the "mafia lite" version -
awesome Andrina - hope this works for you -

The part I don't like about
SCD is that it cuts all carbs, starches, legumes and grains out. This literally just gets you to eat fruit, veggies and meat. Now I struggle to feel full on just veggies (plus I am told too much veggie fibre isn't good for IBD). Moreover too much fructose gives me the runs. So I am increasing my meat consumption almost 5 fold from my norm. My personal opinion is that meat (especially red meat) ain't good for the colon since its harder to digest so I usually try to avoid meat and replace with fish. Concomitantly on SCD everything is too restricted and breaks other personal rules on my diet.
At least if legumes were allowed I could eat my chick pea chips. Grrr...

Maxmillion-legumes are allowed on the scd, lima beans ,navy beans, lentils,as long as you soak them over night.

Hmmm i guess i should have said it was restrictive on certain legumes like chickpeas.
Soystud: I am restarting my SCD journey (tried it two years ago for 3 weeks but no change in symptoms). Chickpea chips are just chips made from baked chickpeas at my supermarket. They're pretty plain but yummy with my homemade avacado dip.

Starting today.
Joanna how did your broth come out with the chicken feet? I bought some gelantine for my soup.
I don't know what to expect because it didn't help the last 8 months I've done it. A good thing I can say though was I was almost never bloated which I am now all the time. However I didn't gain any weight neither. I'm at 126.2 lbs right now which I gained with pred and eating whatever I wanted.
I don't know.

andrea, it finally gelled! uhh i was so thrilled. i cook my broth for 9 hours usually and the chicken feet did the trick. i only threw 3 in there and they just disintegrated beautifully.
does the diet decrease symptoms even a little? i mean, SCD/paleo still leaves me flaring but it does cut down my bm's to half of what they were and i don't live with a heating pad on my belly now- i'm also NEVER bloated. i will take even a little improvement over nothing at all, you know?

You're right. You think I was too impatient? What bothered me the most was bleeding which didn't go away. Now on pred I still see blood but a lot less.

i don't think you're being impatient at all. if you haven't seen any improvement from SCD after 8 months, it won't work for you. in the book, elaine says it should take a month. i would NOT try it again if it doesn't help you. maybe it's just not the right diet.

Well it got rid of diarrhea but I still had bleeding. Cramps went down and urgency too.

if you've had any improvement then why not continue - unless the cost is greater than the benefit -

I think restarting won't hurt. Just alone that I won't be bloated anymore is something to look forward to :)
I already feel a little better today then yesterday gas wise.
I read it took Elaine's daughter 2 years to be symptom free. And I kept being told that bleeding is the last symptom to go. What is your experience on this for those who do diet?

It's not clear to me that bleeding would be the last symptom to go....think about
that statement for a minute.
The tissue is fragile and inflamed enough to bleed....that's a more serious state of inflammation.
When the tissue starts to heal, there will be more mucus, less bleeding...but STILL inflammation. That part still needs to be healing.
So...she's full of crap.

I failed with SCD years ago as well as many other UC diet mods. What I later discovered is that quite a few of the SCD legal foods did not agree with my colon. Paleo foods however do not cause problems for me. My biggest problems on SCD turned out to be SCD yogurt, fruit juice, most fruit, grains and probably a few more I forget. Different UC symptoms appeared for different foods which is why it took so long for me to figure it out.
Have you ever kept a food diary and done an elimination diet to find out what
your
safe foods are? Everything posted here indicates that everyone is different in food tolerance. Some people are never helped by diet modification and at some point you will have to make that decision which type you are.
Best wishes.

imagardner, yes I had a food diary. What's a good paleo website? Are you in remission thanks to diet?
Heather, it makes sense.

The person to ask about
Paleo is InSoFla. It's just so basic I never bought a book or went to a website. My colon tells me what it tolerates not a website, I just noticed over time that Paleo is the closest food list to my tolerances, not exact but the closest. I eat nuts however and don't understand why Paleo is "no-nut", wouldn't cave-people have eaten nuts? Mysterious to me.
Yes, diet gave me remission, absolutely, positively. But I also credit VSL#3 and take it daily. I haven't needed a mesalamine enema in about
a year but that is the only med I can say was beneficial
for me
. Your situation may be different. If somethings working keep doing it.

What are you eating which is considered "illegal" on SCD?
I have issues with fruit too. Yogurt I'm not sure.

I think you misunderstood my post. I had problems with "legal" SCD food items. I don't know if I'm eating any illegal SCD foods but I'll think about
that and get back to you. In other words I think Paleo has fewer food choices than SCD but I haven't compared them side by side. As I said I let my colon do the deciding, not any list. So far so good.

imagardner, I understood what you said about
yogurt and fruit. I may be fructose intolerant myself and have to be careful too. I was just wondering what you can do what is considered illegal on SCD. Just curious.
What are the symptoms you look out for? Like gas etc I know when I have gas the food was not well tolerated. What else should I look out for?

I can tell something I ate/drank was a problem when my # of BM's is higher the next morning. Then I mentally look back and figure out what it could be. Since I know all proteins are safe for me that removes that food group from being the problem.
Gas or bloating has been out of my symptoms for a long time now. Yogurt definitely did that. I thought ice cream was somewhat OK but it's not, increased BM's.
I haven't had bleeding for a very long time, that stopped when I went gluten-free.
Constipation was a strong signal but hard to pinpoint which food(s) did it because it kinda sneaks up slowly. Carbs including non-gluten grains like corn or rice products give me C. This is my least objectionable symptom now however and I had it even before getting UC. I think my pre-UC gut didn't process carbs well either.
That's all the food/symptoms I can think of. Yours (again) may be different. I've found the best way is to find your safe foods and then test each other type of food one at a time. Ice cream was the hardest to give up and I was in denial about
it way too long.
I agree with others that think we are missing the correct bacteria to process non-proteins. Until a genius figures out how to fix that I will eat what agrees with my colon.
