so since i can't quite seem to get off the pred completely, i decided to give the enemas one more try after seeing you all rave about how great they are, haha.

my gi prescribed me with pentasa enemas again, and i will be starting them sometime this weekend.

the only thing i really didn't like about them last time was that they made my tush really sore!! any tips to help with this?

how often do you take them when coming out of a flare? for how long? (i believe my gi has given me a week's worth, to be used nightly.) when do you start to notice positive effects?

on the weekends i sometimes have late nights out drinking & very occasionally the person i am seeing may sleep over, so i'm wondering if its okay to skip a night here & there if i wind up having to use them for longer than the week?

if these don't work...i will be PISSED. haha!

When I flare I use nightly, now I am down to 2x a week, sat and weds.
I would say you can miss one occ. why r u waiting for weekend? They r no big deal!
about sore but I have tried everything! I have so many creams and crap it's redic! The only thing that might be effective is desitan or butt paste, o
Use it now before butt gets sore! Right now I using lidocaine cause I sore! Baths help and i changed my laundry soap to super gentle kind. Good luck

soreness on the butt can be prevented with additional lubricant and/or an ointment like dubicaine. soreness in the butt might be the sulfate in the suspension. there is a sulfate-free Rowasa but it is expensive.

some get fast results, but 5-asa in general, oral or rectal, is not usually an overnight wonder. it might take more than a week. for more immediate results, you could alternate with a few hydrocortisone enemas to give the 5-asa enemas more of a chance.

Guess I have to be the goody two shoes here and say that drinking may be effecting your recovery. Have you ever eliminated alcohol for a month or two and see if you improve?

i did eliminate alcohol for almost 3 full months! didn't notice any significant improvement. i would say that i definitely can have a rougher day after a night of drinking, but other than that i haven't noticed any long term differences.

Yeah, I like my beer and it doesn't affect my uc either -- everyone responds differently.

As far as the sore tush thing goes, my 30 pack of Meslamine Suspension Enemas always comes with a bunch of PureTouch Tush Wipes (not sure if others get these too?). They are essentially big wet-naps with Aloe Vera & Vitamin E and it helps with the irritation from wiping one's butt as often as most of us end up doing here.

I've used KY or generic lubricant and plain old petroleum jelly when inserting the enema. Use it liberally on both applicator and on butt to prevent injury.
Use baby wipes (no alcohol) every day to maintain cleanliness and sit in a bath with epsom salt every day to ease irritated skin.

I have tried; Vaseline, desitine, a compound my dr gave me, lidocaine, butt paste, vagisil!!!! Hemi stuff and the list goes on! I think the issues with sore butt are worse than the uc in my case. I had a few weeks no issues and now the lidocaine is working... Um for a minute!
Doc found a fissure but the compound healed that . Now I can relate to poor little babies.
It starts with hot poop and once that starts its miserable. I think when I eat dairy it's worse. I stay away if I can from it.

so just tried my first enema tonight. couldn't hold it for more than 30 seconds, have mad abdominal pain now & had diarrhea immediately afterward! even in the summer in the midst of my flare i was at least able to retain them overnight! is this normal? :( should i try doing another one tonight, or just wait until tomorrow?

I would try another tonight. The diarrhea wouldn't have been caused by the enema...

Did you recently taper the pred?

Did you warm it up to body temp first?
Too cold could have caused that reaction, in my opinion.

still on 5mg of pred. was hoping the enemas would help me get off of it. the 10 hours since i took the first enema are the worst i've had in months.

i did try to warm it up, but it did feel cold going in, so hoping that is what caused the reaction & will try again tonight.

Try half an enema tonight and another half tomorrow...for some that's a help. It won't give you a bit amount of med, but at least it'll help to retain maybe.

Consider to split the asacol to twice a day rather than once a day...
