how long do guys start seeing a difference when on Pred. my GI changed some of my meds last week and now i started a flair. no fun at all so that means a new round of pred. last one was in june. it sucks cause for me it usually takes 2 weeks before i start seeing a difference. im hoping since i caught the flare early that i will feel better faster. so much work to do at work but cant go to work like this :(

If its just a minor flare they may not work or be needed in the first place. They are a nasty drug which I think do more harm then good. Try the enemas if you haven't already.

i was running to the bathroom every 30 min so i think its a pretty bad flair up. at night i get up every hour. i take salofalk suppositories every night. i know its a bad drug and i hate all the crappy side effects it gives you. but i didnt see any other choice.

What were your med changes and why did your GI change them? I've always been a huge believer in if it ain't broke - don't fix it. Sounds like he was trying to fix something that wasn't broken and now you get stuck paying the price.

just before the holidays i started seeing blood and mucus but no diareah. when i went to my GI appointment she checked my bloodwork for imuran and i wasnt metabolizing it right. she lowered my imuran to 25mg and added zyloprim (allupurinol) she also stopped my mezavant. i think maybe she was too quick at changing all my meds and my symptoms got worse. the zyloprim didnt even get the chance to start working. i went to the ER on sunday and they prescribed me pred.

She stopped your mezavant cold turkey? If so, that was a really bad thing to do IMO.

40 mg of pred usually has me in complete remission in about 17 to 18 days pretty much like clockwork if I catch the flare before it is really severe. I needed I/V steroids one time with an out of control flare and had to spend a week and a half in the hospital.

I'm surprised mezavant is available in Canada. We can't get that or Salofalk tabs here in the United States.

How much pred are you on? I used to see results within days.

i was supprised with the mezavant too. i was on the full dose too. just stopped cold turkey. maybe that is what made my symptoms worse. when i was at the ER sunday they gave me a bag of iv steroids and now im on 40mg of pred for one week than i have to taper 5mg per week.

pred works very fast on me, problem is my joint pain comes back as I taper off

that's why I'm on Aza now

I'm not sure if it's the pred or Lialda that is helping my gut, but I have been D and Blood free since late November but when I taper the pred my joint pain returns but my gastro symptoms do not.

1 week isn't very long to be on 40. It is powerful, but still takes a few weeks for full effect. You might want to ask about staying at 40 for at least two weeks, or until you symptoms are totally under control.

You might want to go back on the mezavant too. Seems like it was probably helping based on what happened when you stopped cold turkey. What was the reason she took you off it?

For my current, awful flare I was put on 40 mg/day of pred. When that didn't work after 12 days it was upped to 60, when that didn't work after about 12 more days I went back down to 40, just in case it was at least keeping me from getting worse. I've now been on it a little over a month and don't think it's done anything but make me unable to sleep. This is my first time taking it and my doc says my UC is "steroid refractory". I had my first Remicade infusion earlier this week, and if that works I can start tapering off the pred. Fingers crossed and lots of prayers going up!! I hope you feel better soon!

Pred is indeed a nasty drug. I will do everything possible to never take it again, the side effects are just too much for me, good luck.

yeah i hate taking that drug too. but luckely i almost never have too many side effects from pred. the first time i took it i had heart palpitations but that was only once. i usually just get a bit of insomnia and a bit of weight gain. lol i can deal with that. ive been on 40 mg for 4 days now and last night i actually was able to sleep and not run to the loo every hour. im not going to the bathroom every 30 min anymore. i drank an ice tea earlier and had to go to the bathroom after that i guess it was a bad idea. ill probably be going back to work tomorow ive already missed 1 week.

I'm taking pred at mo, takes 2-3 wks to work for me I was on 40mg for 20 days, down to 30mg for 5 days now 3rd day at 25mg and supposed to taper 5mg every 5 days according to doc. Not happening tho I am already starting to get the all too familiar cramps etc etc etc. so gonna hold at 25mg at mo. I really don't see the point in trying to get off it quickly and risking a flare again only to end up having to increase dose and be on it longer.
