hello everybody i am new to the forum i am always on the website looking for tips and reading peoples storys so i thought why not join :). anyway let me tell you about my story i have had ulcerative colits for nearly a year now when i first started to get symptoms i would ignore it because i was due to start my army trainning which was stupid of me till it got to a point where i had to go to hospital so i went and had a colonoscopy and was diagnosed with uc my consultant put me on 40 mg pred 3x3 400mg asacol a day after a week in hospital i was discharged and was told to reduce my pred 5mg weekly so i did and got of the pred all was going well then boom another flare back to hospital again where i was put back on 40 mg then 3x4 400mg asacol and a new pill azaphiprine 100mg daily and iron 400mg daily this was like a wonder drug till 2 mounths down the line where the azaphiprine would made me vomit so that got changed to mercaptopurine and i was of the pred again and i started feeling unwell just after christmas so i went to hospital with my emoglobin 6.1 had to have blood transfusion and back on 40 mg pred 150 mg mercatopurine and my iron and 3x4 400mg asacol and a new pill omprezole 20 mg got discharged last week and the bleeding and pain stated again 3 days ago so i went back and my emoglobin was 5.7 currently in hospital had 4 units blood and just waiting to see my gi tommorow to hopefully change my meds because my body has become emune to my current meds i just hope there is is other things they can try because i dont want to have surgery. i never try and let it get me down i have a supportive family and freinds but i just feel like i am not getting anywhere and the dieses is winning but i try my hardest to beat it :) :) dan. sorry for the long post

Dan, welcome to the forum. Sorry for your recent problems.

I recently submitted a post about 6-mp and bone marrow suppression. Like you, i've been hospitalized many times for blood transfusions. Some people don't matabolize 6-mp or azathioprin properly. I would be two weeks into a flare and my hemo. level would be 7 or less. My doctors never caught this, and thought it was due only to loosing blood from active UC.

I hate to see anyone else get misdiagnosed. Talk to yor GI about bone marrow suppression. They can tell if they properly screen you blood tests.

After stopping 6-mp I haven't been anemic once. Hope you can get this resolved and get on meds. that work for you.

When you were describing your symptoms, I thought...omg! That's what happened to me.

In the long run I think the 6-mp helped get me into remission, but I'd rather skip the anemia in the future. Now I'm back to prednisone. Hate it's side effects as well, but at least I can get my symptoms under control without having to be hospitalized.

Please let me know what your GI says tomorrow. I'm very curious if this is the source of your anemia. Good luck! :)
