I have active disease in descending colon and sigmoid colon. Can someone tell me which type of UC I have. The test say my colon looks normal in the splenic flexure and distal transverse colon. I am having a new pain. It is a burning sharp pain below my rib cage at about waist level on the left side. It feels like gallbladder pain but in the wrong place. I know it is not that because I had that removed 13 years ago. I am still running a low grade fever. They bumped up my prednisone to 10 mg and put me on Levaquin. Also I started VSL 3DS today with half a packet. Is this pain normal with the type of UC I have. I have never had this pain before. My GI is out of town and I am working with someone who doesn't know me. Sorry to write so many posts.

I don't think there are different types of UC. You have a typical case of UC in the descending colon. I think most everyone with UC will have inflammation starting at the rectum and continuing up into the colon. The severity of someone's disease might be considered a measure of how much of the colon is involved.

Your description of the pain on your left side sounds like a spasm issue. I have had spasmodic pain on the right for a few years - it's related to how much stool I have backed up in the colon.

Starting probiotics might cause some additional gas which could be painful. Perhaps you should start with a 1/4 packet.

Thanks for the kind words. I started the VSL after the pain started. I mean the panconlitis and proctiitis those are both words to describe UC depending on where the disease is located. Since the pain is on the left side could it be from the inflammation of my colon?

Do you have an infection? Man, I gotta tell you that I got UC in the first place from being on antibiotics for an infection when it was later found out I didn't have an infection at all. I was on broad spectrum IV antibiotics, followed by the broad spectrum Levaquin. That is one high powered antibiotic and may very well make your UC much worse. Levaquin is even proven to cause UC in a small percentage of patients taking it. Did a GI prescribe that? I really question their wisdom on this choice. Make sure you are taking as much VSL as your body can tolerate but I would check into getting off the Levaquin asap, like yesterday, not when the bottle is empty.

Cipro actually started my UC journey. I probably had it before because I had D for years but it is also possible the D before came from the fact I have recently found out I am lactose intolerant. My PCP gave me the Levaquin. But the GI who is filling in for him said to take it. I have taken it before. I have D while on it but it goes away after. They cannot be sure if I have an infection of not because my WBC count is always high. How much VSL should I be taking? Today is my first day taking it so I don't know how much I can tolerate. Thank you for responding.

You have left sided UC. That is what I have as well.

I went through the worst flare of my life just after taking a big dose of antibiotics. That stuff can reap havoc on UCers. Really hope you get thing under control.

Don't apologize for asking questions. We all get to learn something.

I think the suggested therapeutic dose for VSL#3 DS is to get to two packets a day, but take it slow so you don't get discomfort while adjusting.

Thanks everyone. Any recommendations on how much VSL 3DS I should take since I am just starting it but am going on antibiotics? My doctor wrote the RX for 2 packets a day. Turns out that was the problem with my pharmacy originally denied my Rx, the doctor wrote it for pills instead of packets. Thank you

I just realized I messed up and didn't sewerage the antibiotics and VSL by two hours. Guess I killed good bacteria. Oops

Yep I get pain in stomach area, feels like a twisting stabbing pain, usually followed by a bowel movement. It feels like a huge ball of wind

I saw a poster on my recent GI visit. Left sided UC is a nickname theres another name for it. Distal UC i think it is.
