Yes, from my point of view there is a connection.
I am living in a crappy apartment for the sake of the school district and there is no ventilation whatsoever. And since this is winter time, I can not open any of our windows because of this ice in the window panes. I use to scrub bath and various corner of the apartment with Clorox wipes every weekend. It would take only a week to grow this mold back to real black.
Its been my 3rd year now and both Novembers I got sick. This time pretty much coincides with mold growth. Finally, in Dec, we got 2 DampRid and kept at each window. Viola, no mold in a month. Replacing Damprid every month is an expense, plus you can not use it in places like bathroom which is the source of humidity. So I got http://www.eva-dry.com/products/eva-dry-1100-petite-dehumidifier/ and http://www.eva-dry.com/products/eva-dry-500-mini-dehumidifier/ but the 500 variety is crap and doesn't work. The 1100 petite one works like charm, just keep it on for 2 hours after shower and mold reduces significantly. I scrub the walls and windows about once a month.
Hope this helps.
