Hello all-I have been away for a while as I had my UC under control with Asacol HD (1x daily) and Lomotil for the past few years.

Fast forward to about  month ago, and I got hurt in a training exercise. I tore my rotator cuff and have been in pain as I wait for my ortho surgeon appointment this week. Out of the blue, I start flairing last week. I have changed nothing in diet/routine/etc. The only thing I did differently was take Vicodin for a few days, to try and dull the pain, but quit it as I didn't like the effects.

Could it be, going out on a limb, that the chronic inflammation due to the tear in shoulder, might have triggered an auto-immune response?? Just so odd that it came out of the blue..Hate this stuff!

Are you constipated? The lomotil paired with the vicodin could have bound you up and aggravated you? Vicodin has acetominophen.. you didnt take any NSAIDs, did you?

coulda been a million things..

I had a 10 year remission followed by a severe flare which resulted in me losing my colon to surgery. I spent years trying to figure out why I failed to stay in remission, and finally gave up. UC is unpredictable, you will have periods of flares followed by periods of remission. I don't think you can always predict when your next flare will be, or what will cause it.

Vicodin has led to bleeding for me in the past before. Maybe it's just that and not an actual flare? Have you tried tapering off or discontinuing the vicodin?

I also suspect the vicodin.

I tend to get bleeding if I get constipated and the Vicodin can make you constipated. I take VSL 3, 4 to 8 capsules a day, and the constipation and the bleeding both go away.

Off the Vicodin-now just running back and forth to bathroom. Started Canasa suppositories and Entocort up again..

Sucks about your shoulder injury. Hope surgery will fix it up for you.

Lomotil won't control your UC. So, that's not a med that would have helped you...just bms quality/consistency and spasming.

you weren't on any rectal meds....for maintenance.
But considering you had serious injury, i would assume that tipped you in more favour of a flare.

As well, your preoccupation with the injury can have you neglecting some symptoms of a flare starting.

No use in wondering the why....just concern yourself with the what you can do to deal with it as early as possible.

if you were using Lomotil for maintenance: then you weren't truely in remission anyway. And having the injury plus the vicodin plus the stress of chasing up these appointments could have tipped you more in favour of a flare.
