From the Univ. Of Nevada School of Medicine:
"Generally the normal number of bowel movements a person may have ranges from 3 per day to one every 3 days. Each person may be slightly different, and this variation is normal. Less than one stool every 3 days may indicate constipation if the stool is dry, hard, and difficult to pass. More than 3 stools per day may indicate diarrhea if the stools are loose or watery."
My "normal" prior to having UC was 2-3 BMs a day.
The blood could be from UC or hemorrhoids.
Your GI can check you for hemorrhoids when you see him.
Meanwhile, you can try some over-the-counter Hem. treatment like preparation H or witch hazel. Also watch you diet so that you're not straining to have a BM. Drink plenty of water, too.
I agree that rectal mesalamine is worth trying. It could get rid of the bleeding and does not have the dangerous side effects of other choices. I'm using it to get rid of last bit of rectal inflammation.
