Mezavant and salofalk together?

My son's now been prescribed mezavant 1200mg at 4 tablets per day and salofalk 2g enema. He has had severe UC but at the last colonoscopy things were a bit better so the doctors want to give this a try as we have tried everything else including biologics. He still has all symptoms of urgency and diarreah though. I have just picked up the prescription for the meds above and the pharmacist said that taking the above 2 together at that dose is a very high dose - higher than recommended. I imagine that because he has been so severe they are giving him an aggressive dose. Anybody else taken the 2 together? Any side effects and are they relatively safe? Better than biologics surely in terms of safety? Thanks for your thoughts.

I am on that combo (and many here also take similar dosage of 5asa)
Mine is even more.. I do the 4 tablets of Mezavant (1200mg/each) and a nightly 4g enema.

been doing it for a long time, no side effects (other than better control of symptoms... )

Some more reassurance, I've been on 4g Salofalk enemas since July and Mezavant 4.8g since October and I haven't had any terrible side effects. Occasional upset stomach but nothing out of the ordinary. I don't know why the pharmacist would say something like that. Mezavant 4.8g daily is normal to induce and maintain remission. I hope your son gets better with this combination of medicine!

how old is your son? that's the only factor maybe? age, weight?

I've done the combo for 24 years....I'm obviously not sensitive to salicylates, so it's been a go for along while for me.

Is your son's UC throughout his colon?

It's NOT a higher than recommended dosage. Please don't fear that aspect at this point.

So, you mean to say that this hasn't been a med he's had as of yet??

Is he taking the Mezavant all at once or in split dosage? I'd suggest maybe divide the dosage to twice a day.
The enemas at night.

Is he using any probiotics?

I'm on the same dose. Completely fine. I would also consider splitting the Mezavant dose, provided you think he'll/you'll remember to take it. I'm not 100% convinced the once a day dosage is as effective as taking it twice a day.

Thankyou all for your comments. I really appreciate them all. In answer to your questions he's 20, has been very ill, just avoided surgery you can see the meds he's had from the list below. We still don't know if the whole colon's affected as it was too severe to look very far though as it has improved a bit with the adacolumn trial he's just done they will have another go. They think it affects the whole large bowel. He is taking biokult probiotic. Do please keep the comments coming they've been such a help.Thanks again.

at 20 that dose should not be a problem at all.... hope the enemas help!

I'm 20 and my post is above about my experience with the two medications. Your son has been having a really rough time with his UC, I hope the Mezavant will help him. I know it helped me but so did the enemas, they just take longer to improve one's condition.
