Something truly weird happened... I farted

I was sitting on the couch yesterday evening and something truly weird and completely surprising happened... I farted... and it was wonderful. I'm over a month into this flare and I have not dared to even consider doing such a thing anywhere but from the safety and security of the toilet bowl lest I soil myself. Flares do really rob you of the simple things in life like the joy of farting. Yesterday, I ran a couple times to the toilet only to fart and it was starting to get to me. At least this was one bet I did not loose...

I am now at 5 bms a day trending downward, and I am sleeping way better during the nights (waking up 2 or less times a night). I've been on 6mp since January 23rd and I think it is finally starting to kick in.

I see my GI tomorrow and I am hoping he will start the pred taper soon as I am sure that'll start to take care of what remains insomnia-like for me. Anything I should ask about my blood tests since i am new to 6mp? I would assume my blood cell counts are okay since I haven't got any panic calls from my GI to stop the 6mp. Should I ask how well I am metabolizing it?

that's fricken awesome, I know the feeling. although it's only happened once to me, it's a great feel not to shart but really just to fart! Congrats!

Thats great. I have soiled myself a lot of times in such attempts.

At least with me, silent launch of the 'missile' is no longer possible, its always LOUD. The joy is really robbed when you are in a public place.

Ah the ever elusive "un-messy" fart....awesome huh? :)

When you go in for your blood testing for 6mp, they check your CBC and liver enzymes but it doesn't show how well your metabolizing it. You need a test called the Prometheus metabolites test. This is a separate test and you can ask about that.

I've done the CBC blood test several times now, and I will again this week. I also have an order to have a Hepatic Function Panel (LFT) test done once monthly, which I will do as soon as I've been on 6mp a full month. Not sure what that one does...

I asked about the Prometheus blood test and he said it is a $400 test and a lot of people don't want to do it because of the cost. No idea if my insurance covers it all or in part.

You can call your insurance company and find out. When I first started on 6mp, I had the initial Prometheus and I only paid $65 out of pocket and after that my insurance viewed the Prometheus metabolites test as monitoring and preventative so covered it 100%.

congratulations! it's definitely a huge milestone....with great satisfaction. Just don't trust them all, however..lol. especially if you have any rectal meds in the mix.

I go approximately 6 - 12 times per day, with half of them being farts that can't be trusted, so, in reality, I actually go about 3-6 times per day. I guess that's the difference between a normal person and a UC'r. Normal people can just let one loose, a UC'r has to go running to the toilet. Congratulations on your promotion.

Are you talking about PROMETHEUS® Thiopurine Metabolites test? The webpage does not give a lot of information apart from 'it checks the levels of treatment are within the range to get your symptoms under control'. My question is, if the user is on 6-MP/Imuran for a while and it is working, what extra information does this test offer? If the test is as expensive as iPoop says, is it worth spending that money. My insurance is HDHP-type.

Well, if 6MP isn't working for you the Prometheus test could help explain why, but conversely, if it is working the test could help determine if you could safely decrease your dose without losing efficacy. Personally if 6MP were working for me and I wasn't on a high dose I probably wouldn't bother.

I remember when I had to go to the toilet each time I needed to pass gas. How frustrating... I also remember rolling the dice a few times and losing. It sounds like you're improving but don't get too confident especially not in public, not yet :)

Delta, exactly what Pluot said.

I had the metabolites test done numerous times, especially in the beginning of my 6mp journey. Because it wasn't working. I kept flaring. The test showed that I just can't metabolize it correctly. If the doc increased my dose, it put my liver into toxicity and the lower doses of 6mp kept me at the very low end of it being therapeutic. But if your not having issues with the 6mp, than I wouldn't even bother having it done, unless eventually you start having issues with it such as high liver levels. Than the test should be done to determine if a lowered dose is still benefitting you.
